Should I care about a 4k tv when 1080p seems fine?

I'm in the market for a new 50inch tv to replace my 42in Sharp 1080p.

Movies I watch are usually 720p and looked excellent to me on the 42in.

Should I look at the more expensive 4k?
Won't the down sampling blur and make 720p viewing on a 4k look goofy?

I'm trying to stay cheap.

At 50 inches, 1080 is more than enough for you, unless you are sitting insanely close to the screen.
Also, 4k will not make your 720p material look any better.

If all you're watching is 720p content, there's no reason to go 4k.

Looking around, seems 1080p sets are few and far between and not much cheaper than 4k sets.

I'm looking in the <$500 range btw.

Find the best TV for your price range. If it happens to do 4K, go for it. If not, then don't worry about it.
