SBLive! / Phillips Acoustic Edge

Is the Phillips Acoustic Edge really that much better then the SBLive?

People say it sounds better, but how much of the CPU does that card use? How are the drivers?

How much longer will Phillips be in the soundcard business?

It's better and has better drivers. Screw CPU usage, if you have a recent comp it wouldn't matter.

CPU UTILIZATION WITH 24 DS/DS3D STREAMS
LIVE PLATINUM 5.1 4%
ACOUSTIC EDGE 6%
SANTA CRUZ 6%

this was in a soundcard shootout article in maximum pc january01 i threw in the santa cruz because that was in the shootout also and because i have that soundcard

I just picked up the Philips Acoustic Edge. I am upgrading from Aureal SQ2500.

I chose the Philips because:

1) Usually lower CPU usage than SB Live!
2) Dolby 5.1 Capability, like SB L!
3) Virtual 5.1 Surround on headphone, 2 or 4 speakers on all applications.

#3 was really the kicker for me. I have Altec Lansing ACS-44 (2sp w/ sub) set-up. It sounds great, but I don't want to "throw" away this set of speakers to get a 5.1 set. Plus, I have nowhere to put the rear speakers.

If the SB L! had #3, I would have bought that.

I would've gone with the Game Theater XP, just because Sensaura seems to sound better in games then Q3D
