RTCW vs. MoH:AA

I think comparing the two is almost inevitable, and since I finally finished MoH:AA yesterday I thought I'd chime in with my .02.

MoH:AA was a pretty good game, but it bothered the hell out of me! I kept seeing flashes of true greatness in the game, but it had more than it's share of flaws. The action was good, but the story was a bit disjointed to me and I never really felt like I knew what was going on. I won't even begin to go into my feelings about the ending...I won't spoil it if you're not thru yet, let's just say it's less than overwhelming..

I felt the game was rushed out. It has a few technical issues to resolve and it's a resource whore from hell that even faboo boxes might have trouble running.

RTCW I felt was a good game that turned out great. I can't argue with anyone who's pissed that zombies and robots made it into a WWII story, but I'll take a fun & easy to follow plotline and give them slack for the un-authentic zombies & such since they made up for it with such a wickedly nice game! RTCW was the first game I can recall in a LOOOOOONG time that I didn't feel the need to wait for a patch to come out to play it decently. It didn't have any major bugs for me, and damned few minor ones. It just seemed really like a really finished and polished program. The engine might have been the same in both games, but the RTCW team sure used there's better! The game's scalability to run well on a lower-end machine is a sweet bonus, and the eye-candy and details in the game beat MoH:AA hands down in my book.

Just thought I'd see what everyone elses opinions were. I haven't tried multi-player in either yet, but I've heard that RTCW is the better of the two. Anyone have an opinion?

In RTCW the music was excellent! I still occasionally listen to some of these wav-s in *.pak. But the game itself... I played it with medium difficulty, but began to use cheats in this zombie level already - I can't stand when enemies always sneak from the back. Also it was great that soldiers and zombies fought with each other ;)

MoH:AA I played with "hard" and didn't use cheats until very end - there was too much spawning taking place and too little life left. The game was more interesting, but music was worse then in RTCW.

Also, RTCW was more beautiful, but character animation was better in MoH:AA.

I enjoyed both thoroughly! My brother warned me to play RTCW before I played MOHAA because if I played it the other way around I wouldn't have been able to play RTCW. I think in all honesty, he was right, but not by much. I still would have enjoyed RTCW a lot, but there are the differences between them.

1) Story: I think that both had really good stories, and it's hard to compare when RTCW is set in a fantasy world and MOHAA is set in the real world. But I think the story of RTCW got me more.

2) Action: RTCW scared the hell out of me sometimes, there are more bits that I can remember in that game than I can in MOHAA... but when I played the Omaha Beach, as soon I found myself in the amphibious boat on its way to the beach, I had goosebumps that wouldn't give until the end of that mission. It's hard to choose... they're both so good!

3) Weapons: Ha! This is hard to decide, but I think that RTCW took that cake. MOHAA's weapons were brilliant, but RTCW felt beefier... I dont know how to describe it.

4) Feeling of real-life: MOHAA takes the cake on this one. RTCW was fun, but the fantasy element, although scary, wasn't very effective in making me feel like I was in serious danger. MOHAA is much more effective in that area, just like System Shock 2 was (and MY GOD THAT GAME WAS F*CKING SCARY!!! )

5) Models: Both games have amazing looking models, so it's hard to decide. But I'm leaning towards RTCW because of the ladies... :p

6) Music: Wolfenstein's music was absolutely brilliant! Listening to those tunes on the radios in the buildings was very atmospheric. MOHAA's soundtrack was identical to the PSX versions, which are really good, giving it a more "Saving Private Ryan" feel of real life rather than hardcore action.

7) Sound effects: MOHAA wins this round hands down. RTCW had really good sound effects (making the guns seem beefier), but MOHAA's weapons and background sound effects make the game EVER so authentic!

8) Setting / Scenery: RTCW was absoutely beautiful when you were indoors, but MOHAA shone in the outside levels (and RTCW was mostly indoors anyway, a lot of MOHAA was outside). I can't decide here...

Overall, I think that RTCW was a thrilling game that had special meaning to me because of my love for Wolfenstein 3D ( :p ), and yet I have a special place in my heart for MOHAA, because I love the series on PSX, the best console shooters I've played since GoldenEye. So how woul I rate them?

RTCW: 9.5 / 10 MOHAA: 9.49 / 10

:D

RTCW wins by far. Medal of Honor was a disapointment. The graphics were nothing impressive. The only thing it had going for it that it was like playing Saving Private Ryan.

I think MOHAA's single player game is far superior. I don't care for the story so just in terms of movement of the characters and weapons. I liked the fact that MOHAA's is more realistic(not the story, but the mechanics of game play and control). Multi-player is quite the opposite, while MOHAA is fine, but it does not offer anything new or special in terms of game play. RTCW seems to be highly polished, well thought out. Team plays with differenet classes and so on.......

Comparing the graphics is very interesting. I would like to find more about how differently they implemented the same Quake3 Arena engine. RTCW is such an eye candy. It has the feel of glossy Magazine cover. Photo realistic. MOHAA is a bit grainy, sort of like oil-based painting, but the level of detail is quite impressive.

I suspect MOHAA was rushed out of the door, cuz it runs slow for many people with high-video card in some levels. Poor optimization or poor coding whatever they call it. All in all, I wouldn't say one game is better than the other. They are both superb game, now i can't play any other 3D shooting game cuz these games spoiled me. Interating with other players and watching them doing silly things in multi-player is great fun for me. Nice games.

MOHAA better in single player. Multi-player is nothing special.

RTCW has fun multi-player. Single-player sucked to me.

well, i reviewed both for my magazine and there i stated that the two of them are uncomparable, despite the same "historic" setting and alsd the same engine.
wolf is an action rollercoaster, yet MOH is shooter trying to be tactical game a bit. like IGI, only more FPS oriented.
the heart of wolf is shooting. the heart of MOHY is plot.
and where wolf excersises the very best of q3 engine, MOH clearly shows its weaknesses.
the games couldn't be more different.
that's just my opinion, of course.

RTCW gets real old real fast. I was expecting a romp through Nazi fortresses and instead battled the paranormal in catacombs. Lame.

Both are great games.

But if I had to choose

I'd say MOHAA is better for the single player.
And RTCW is better for the multiplayer. Which means that RTCW will last longer in popularity.

I just had more fun playing MOHAA

Tons of Action in that game.
Loved it silly.:D :D :D

Just a personal opinion, but having played both games multiplayer (the demos only) I'd recommend any of you that like the multiplayer of MOHAA at all, like the beach mission I've heard described in single player, or find the multiplayer in RTCW a bit too Q3'ish...try Day of Defeat v2.0 for Half-Life. Of course, the graphics aren't up to the standards of the other 2, but the atmosphere and the gameplay, IMO, are far superior.

I really wish valve would hurry up with HL 2 so these mod makers could move to a better looking engine. ;) They are starting to look like a 1 mega-super-hit wonder company.

..as far as single player...each game has different likes for me..of which I am too lazy to type them out right now...
