Rage128 (XP OpenGL problems!)

Hi, I have a driver problem with my Connect3D Rage128 PRO Ultra 32MB. When I install the default ATi Rage128 WindowsXP driver, 6.13.3279.0, automatically from the executable file, the card is recognised as a “RAGE 128”, and Rage 128 Tweaker doesn’t seem to know the driver version (says “n/a”).

I have also tried installing the driver manually, and choose the exact driver settings. As normal I can choose plenty of graphics card models, but none of them seem to fit my card:

AIW 128 PCI
AIW 128 PRO AGP
AIW 128 AGP
Magnum/Xpert128/Xpert 99
Magnum/Xpert128/X99/Xpert2000
Rage 128 PRO 4XL
Rage Fury
Rage Fury Pro
Rage Fury Pro/Xpert 2000 Pro
Rage Fury/Xpert 128/Xpert 2000
Xpert 128
Xpert 2000
Xpert 2000 Pro
Xpert 99
Xpert 99/Xpert 2000

Well, i see no Rage128 PRO Ultra..? I have tried the “Rage 128 PRO 4XL”, which gives med the same result as installing the driver automatically: 600 3DMarks instead of the 1500-1600 other users get from the same driver!

What can I do? Have I chosen the wrong card on the list?

I have also tried an unofficial driver, called “Rage128_Fury_6.73.1.1-5019_XP_CP.ZIP”. It recognises the card as a “Rage128 PRO Ultra”, but I still cannot run OpenGL in 3DMark, and gaming is not possible with the lousy framerates.

I run WindowsXP Pro build 2600 with DX9.

Can you help med?

Kind Regards,
Mathias Kjærsgaard

Thanks. I tried the drivers, but damn, i still get lousy 600 3DMarks and games run as ****!

I tried both the direct install, which calls the card "Rage 128" and manually choosing the "Rage 128 Pro" option. Equally bad results :(

Could it be the bios of the card?

that card isn't all that fast

but you might want to make sure the drivers are getting loaded ok
microsoft can be a pain once it's signed drivers are in threre.

what game are you trying to run
I could get Battlefield 1942 to run if I tone it down
but also you need at least 512mb of system memory to run game smoothly

try the Nascar Heat demo
it should run fine and you can take out some of your fustration

Well, consider the fact that the average Rage 128 Pro score is around 12-1500 with WinXP and up to 2500 with Win9x/ME

How can my score be so low, when I loaded the driver correctly? How can the OS-difference be so huge?

Regards,
Mathias

try installing the driver from the device manager
install from a specific location
then check the don't search I'll choose
then use the have disk button and browse to the driver inf file.

the only other thing to try is to uninstall the drivers from the control panel
and then remove all the left over driver files and try it again

The driver provided with XP does not support OpenGL. You will need to download the Rage 128 Pro driver from www.ati.com
The name of your card is irrelevant. All that is necessary is for you to know the chipset - Rage 128 Pro.
The ATI setup program will most likely give you a "No supported device" error, but the files will be unpacked to C:\ATI\.....
Install the driver from device manager and reboot. All should be fine now.

In this case I think the name is important
the ultra suggest that it wasn't made by ATI

and the powered by ATI Rage128 PRO Ultra drivers have a later release date than the standard made by ATI Rage128 PRO drivers.

also in my case originally the video bios date was later than the Rage128 PRO driver date.

Well, big z, i tried that, and i still get a lousy half of what the other Rage18-XP-guys get on the Futuremark ORB :(

So what should i do? Flash it?

Connect 3D btw

I doubt if there are any newer flashes for the card
you might try adjusting some of your system bios settings

Bios Settings

I've had some cards not perform up to par before
I can't say exactly the cause I just know that going thru the steps again incase something was missed.

then you could always try something like powerstrip too

Re: Rage128 (XP OpenGL problems!)

I would just get a new card, unless your pc is really old. I gave up on mine for games in 1999. At this point I got an nvidia geforce. This card is absolute garbage. It was a decent card when it first came out in the pentium 2 days. If you have a better machine than that I would pick up something online. You can easily grab a geforce 2 ti for like $15 and that would give you easily four times the performance. Basically any card you can find now is better than that card. You won't be able to play any games whatsoever other than games from it's era. Games that I found ran good on the card are half-life, NFS3 + 4, 2D games and anything else from 1998-1999.

Re: Rage128 (XP OpenGL problems!)

I think my rig is okay, [email protected], IC7, KHX3500 ;)

I bought this card for fun and just want to bench it. The previous owner told med that he just installed the standart driver and got 2530 3DMarks. When i do the same i get only 600, so i have an issue there :(

Could a change for Win98 perhaps help?

Yes, the software may make a difference here, and the Win9x drivers may actually be better in this case. And in general Win98 vs WinXP can make a difference with 3dmark.
