Rage Fury Pro - "capture device is currently in use"

I have a Rage Fury Pro installed in a WinXP Pro w/SP2 machine.

Latest ATI drivers and MMC installed.
Driver: 6.13.3279
MMC: 7.2
DVD: 5.0

The ATI video in program works fine and I can capture using it. However, when I try to use Nero Vison Express 2 or MS Movie Maker 2 I get an error message telling me that "the capture device is currently in use".

Of course, I'm not trying to run Video In at the same time as Nero or MM.

While trying to fix this. I removed all the ATI software. Upon reboot, WinXP installed the default MS drivers for the card. With the default XP drivers installed and no ATI software, Nero and MM both worked. Then I installed the 6.13.3279 ATI driver and I get the same old "capture device in use" message.

Surfing the net, I came across the tv-capture-wdm-6-13-10-5118 driver. Tried loading that, didn't seem to have an effect.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks,
Charles Wilt

Why not use the ATI Video Drivers with the XP Capture drivers? Go to Device Manager (Sound Video and Game Controllers Category) and update the Capture Drivers manually and choose the Microsoft ones. See if that fixes the issue. With this method, you'll still have ATI's D3D and OpenGL drivers installed with Capture Drivers that seem to work with your software.

Let me know how it works out.

Dr. Z.

I considered that. But, I'm not sure exactly what/where to load the MS drivers from.

I don't see them listed with the in the update drivers dialog box. In partiular, I don't see the "(Microsoft)" in the description or the same version numbers.

I do have "show compatible drivers" uncheck. With it checked, only my current driver showed.

Also note that disbling the ATI control panel seemed to have help a little. Movie maker stopped giving the "in use message" and I can capture using it. Though the preview and capture screen looks interlaed with a pinkish screen. The quality of the capture is very bad also.

Nero 6 still gives the same "in use" message.

Thoughts?

When you go thru the manual update, are you selecting:

Install from a specific location (Advanced)

and then choosing:

Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install.

Then when you uncheck "Show compatible hardware", you should see a lot of categories. And one of them should be ATI Technologies as well as a plain ol' ATI category. Make sure you look in both categories as the XP "In-Box" drivers have to be in one of them.

Let me know how it goes.

Dr. Z,

Yes I was doing all that. But the only Vendor listed is "ATI" there isn't a seperate "ATI Technologies".

But, I think I may have found them in \windows\servicepackfiles\i386.

Clicking "Have Disk" and pointing to that location lists "ATI WDM Rage Theater Video (Microsoft)" along with the "ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec (Microsoft)"

I'll try those this weekend. (In the middle of a project, can't crash my PC now ;-)

Any other advice appreciated.

Nope, you are doing what you ought to with that line of thinking. Good luck with your project.

Peace.
