This I find interesting, do not know how accurate. Do like the AMD successor name "Pirates Islands" . The information was updated 15 July 2013 which makes me bring this up here. Anyways it says 20nm process .

The Volcanic Islands series is a family of GPUs developed by AMD, which will succeed the Sea Islands line. Volcanic Islands (VI) is expected to compete with the Nvidia Maxwell and second-generation Xeon Phi architectures, and is expected to be released in October, beginning of Q4 2013.[1][2] The new VI GPUs would be manufactured on a 20 nm Gate-Last process through either TSMC or Common Platform Alliance.[3]

The 2015 "Islands" family of GPUs will be Volcanic Islands' successor, Pirates Islands.

The article/write up does have source links, I just don't see how it will be on the 20nm process unless some uber priced parts maybe available. Then again if you beat your competitors on using a new process you will have some lead way in using it before others start placing orders. That would be interesting if AMD capitalizes before Apple and others.

I hope they do get 20nm out this year even if it is a low volume(risk production) release till next year, it would not be the first time

ot
anything to this odd new naming

So will this be faster than Titan and sold at 499?
I could care less about titan, I want it as fast or close to a 7990 like the 4870 was to the 3870x2 :hmm:
if I only have to buy one I will pay up to around 800 to 1000 for it
but I don't think they can do it at 28nm

Unless they're doing it at 20nm (see article linked a few posts up). Then what does nVidia do to respond? Release a fully functioning GK110?

Very interesting how this will all play out. :)

If at 20nm I would say a very good chance due to being able to keep power and thermals in check plus allow to add more transistors to crunch the data. Still it comes to price/performance/features which Nvidia can lower prices as needed. I do believe this will be the first DX11.2 able GPUs as well, for what that is worth. Now $499 price point, I don't think so. $649 3gb version, $799 Eyefinity 6gb version :p (just guessing).

Sadly I see this becoming a trend :(

It may be interesting to see how AMD prices their new family!

People forget that Titan is not the full GK100 chip. If AMD brings out a 9970 that out performs Titan and charges $800 for the Eyefinity version, nVidia can release the full 2688 core part and charge probably the same or less with likely comparable performance.

In other words I think competition will remain fierce this generation and while introductory prices will be high, they will normalize to a more reasonable level. I do remember people complaining about the "high" introductory price of the 7970. Now look what it sells for.

I'm very much eagerly anticipating this generation, wanting to see what each camp puts forth. :)

I enjoy the decisions they both make and the competitive nature. It's fun -- but it's easy to talk about this in forums but their decisions have consequences, ramifications, accountability and responsibilities - daunting decision makers.

I think Amd cant afford to overprice their cards like Nvidia with the titan. They are still behind in marketshare/mindshare therefore I expect their next high end to be in the same price bracket range as the 7970 when it launched. Give or take 50$

well it launched at $549 and nVidia only had cards out that were $499. I believe if the 580 cost $649, ATi would've priced it right at that amount given the 7970 was slightly faster than a 580.

Given its next gen I would hope it is faster than a Titan but if it is I think it will come in at a very high price to start with. A Titan costs, give or take, a $1,000 so if this launches at $800 it would seem like a good buy, if you can afford that kind of money.

Everyone milks the early adopters and the AMD fanboys will jump all over this just like the Nvidiots jumped on the Titan. Don't forget companies are in it to make money not win hearts and minds!

I think it would be a good opportunity to gain much needed market and mind share, but sure they may try to capitalise on profits, can't blame them for that.

Either would be good for them. AMD's graphics devision is their strongest with lots of fans and support as is. I'd not gripe if they did price high then adjust according to competition and demand.

Naturally well out of my price range but hey- prices will always come down for one reason or another. I can be patient.
