We have a Samsung Plasma its about 5 yrs old. One thing I have noticed by looking at other sets is our picture doesnt look life like. I have seen tvs that look like they are a window and what you are looking at is happening live. Ours has a good picture but it isnt life like. We are at a doctors office watching ET on there plasma and it looks very real. Wtf?

Like Et just reached onto the table and it looked like a real arm. It seems like it has to do allot with how the lightning is reacting. My tv just doesnt have a life like image quality. Hell we just bought a cheap led lcd and the picture on it seems superior to our 50 inch.

Could be the "soap opera effect". Check your settings for something like "motion smoothing," "motion interpolation," “motion judder cancellation” (MJC) or "ME/MC" for motion estimation/motion compensation and adjust until the picture suits your tastes.

Just got home and there is no such option for the interpolation. It does have Cinema smooth now as there was a hack on my tv to be able to get features that were locked. It also has 24p play back capability. This is only available with DVD/Blu ray content. I think my complaint lies in the overall saturation of the picture. Its like the colors are to enhanced. I don't get that real looking light on skin that I have seen in stores on TV's displayed. My tv looks like it has bloom on to some extent.

Google your TV model # and look for optimum settings. Other than that... I got nothin'.

You actually want the soap opera effect?

When most people get a new TV that has that setting, turning it off is the first thing they do.

But anyways, as for your 5 year old plasma it will not have this setting for higher refresh rate, and I could be wrong but I believe its an LED only feature.

Most technically savvy yes, the soap opera effect is horrible to them and drives them crazy... most 'regular' folk have it cranked all the time... they also don't bother with anything close to callibrated settings either.

I hate the soap opera effect and cringe when I'm at other people's house with it on

Referring to the bolded comment, I'm not sure how much I buy into that.

Maybe a couple years ago people didn't care as much. But lately I'm hearing more and more regular people saying it looks very unnatural, and not as the director intended (which is true). When I had to turn it off on my 55 year old aunt because she started noticing the difference, I think at least in my experience times are changing.:)
