NFS:HS and Radeon

Hey gang and fellow ATI users.

I've been an NFS fan since the first, and now I have them all from NFS SE to the latest NFS:PU, but I have problem now. I recently installed NFS:HP in XP, checked the "3D Device Setup" and selected Direct3D Device 1 which I assumed was my Radeon LE. Got the standard warning message, but the game runs great.
Installed NFS:HS, checked the "3D Device Setup" and selected Direct3D Device 1 as I did the last time with NFS:HS. After getting the warning, I try to start the game. Screen goes black, then crashes back to desktop. I change the 3D device back to "Software Renderer", and the game starts and runs great. Of course the graphics aren't so hot, but the game is still fast and pretty good mainly because of my system. (Specs in sig)

So the question is has anyone been able to get NFS:HS to recognize their Radeon card? If not, will it still run by selecting the Direct3D Device 1 like I did in NFS:HS? Or, is this a matter as simple as editing the 3ddata.dat file found in the 3DSETUP folder for the game?

FYI, I've tried Omega's 1086, 1111a, and 1118 drivers. Also, tried the 3276, 3281, and the latest 6037 drivers from ATI. Currently using 6037 and all of my other games are running fine.

Any ideas gang?

TIA,
Satnelwork

NFS:HS and Radeon

I have this problem with the 64 meg VIVO in NFS PU. The solution I found was to switch your z buffering depths in Direct 3D from 16,24,32 to only 16,24. It seems that the newer NFS engine doesn't like 32 bit z buffering.

I'll try it

I'll try it

Thanks zortag. I'll give that a try in a few days. I never thought to change my Direct3D settings or even OpenGL settings. I'll repost with results.

I believe thats what i have set up at home...16:24:32 and HS works fine. PU is a diff stroy, it just boots up to the title screen and just sits there loading for hrs on end. I'll try the 16:24 way when i get home tonight to see if thats the prob...

Cheers!

for pu you need to set the 16,24,32 plust the 8 bit stencil in order for it to work right... if you nfspu hangs at loading screen delete or rename the gimme.dll file in the pu directory and it will work fine...

i dont have high stakes but i would assume it would need the same z buffer set... not just 16,24 but everything on...

NFS:HS and Radeon

I don't know if with the newer drivers the z buffer issue is still present I don't have NFS installed right now but I'll install em both (HS & PU) and see.

I was also running Win 2K pro at the time I was playing these games and I'm running XP pro right now. The biggest peeve for me was having to switch the z buffer back and forth if I played NFS :(

No dice

No dice

Absolutely no success with any Direct3D options I changed. After blanking the screen for a brief second, the game still crashes to the desktop when I try to run the game using DIRECT3D DEVICE 1. Software rendering obviously still works.

I tried enabling and disabling everything on my Directx tab. You name it, I changed it. I tried dozens of different combinations for nearly an hour with no success. NFS:HP still works using Direct3D, but not NFS:HS. It's the weirdest thing. Oops. I didn't even check to see if there is a gimme.dll in the game folder to try renaming as suggested by Pojo. Although it's suggested for NFS:PU, I don't think it would hurt to try it for NFS:HS since nothing else seems to be working.

I'll repost after trying to rename that file.

This is what I did.

This is what I did.

I had the same problem. It's not a Radeon thing. Load your 3D Device Setup using Win98 compatibility (in right-click Properties). Your device should detect. I'm still getting low fps when running NFS:HS with Smoothvision, though, but it works. I've tried patches up to 4.5.

My biggest problem is that I think HS doesn't like NTFS. Whenever I load it, I get a "Only 1 MB diskspace left" error message. I can press OK and keep going, but none of my non-career game progressions are being saved. That is, I finished the whole Knockout tourney, unlocked a track, and when I exit I lose all this progress. Any thoughts anyone?

Interesting concept...

Interesting concept...

Very interesting quanta. I never thought to try that. And since you mentioned "My biggest problem is that I think HS doesn't like NTFS", I just so happen to be running my system drive as NTFS. I also get that aggravating 1MB error message too. But get this, ALL of my games are on a 10GB FAT32 partition. Go figure. I'll try 98 compatibility mode on the 3DSetup later tonight and repost with results. Thanks!

No prob...

No prob...

I just wish EA would release Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 for the PC so we don't have to play all these 2-3 year old games. Personally, I find NFS has gotten kinda boring ever since they stopped making NFS out of EA Vancover (formerly Distinctive Software, of Test Drive 1 and Stunts fame)

Do you know what is the the data file NFS:HS saves your completed tracks, unlocked cars/tracks, etc. in? I'm guessing NFS just isn't creating it or updating it. BTW, career mode works fine. Pretty weird.

Nope...

Nope...

Yet again, nothing works. I tried the Compatibility modes for Win98/WinME and even Win95 but my card was never detected. Oh well, it's kinda OK now that I FINALLY got the original NFS to work again. Only downside is that I had to install it in DOS by going to command prompt only by booting to Win98. AND, I had to disable sound. It recognizes my onboard Cmedia sound as Sound Blaster, but I hear absolutely nothing from my speakers. On top of that, the game locks up after about 10 seconds when I try to use sound. Sonow I have the vanilla of all vanilla installs: no sound, no video, and MINIMAL install. I went minimal because I was tired of installing it over and over.

NFS SE rocks!! It's just as good as it was when it first came out, if not better.

Later!

WAYYYY back in the day I when I first got my radeon, I had to get a "TNT2 patch" to get it to work. Sadly I never could find it again after I reformated once.

Hmm.. I just installed NFS:HS right before i read this because i
was getting bored and desperate to play a game..

It works for me.. Patched it up to 4.44 (or whatever.. it is),
3d-device setup and chose Direct3dkk.. ran it, and it runs normally
(albeit a tad slow)..

Maybe you should try reinstalling it?

good luck..

Thanks, but I already tried that. Many times in fact. I always totally uninstall, then reinstall when I change video drivers. Well, with NFS:HS I have. As usual, all other games continue to work fine. I'm gonna install the latest Omega drivers later tonight and give those a shot. Although I feel by now it's the game, not my drivers.
You mentioned the patch, I've tried 4.42, 4.43, and 4.44, all with no success. My "routine" has been the following:

1. Install new video driver.
2. Uninstall NFS:HS.
3. Reinstall NFS:HS.
4. Try 3DSetup and running game.
5. Install 4.42 patch and try again.
6. 4.43
7. 4.44

This will be my routine tonight with Omega's latest. I don't why I'm trying to get this game to work so badly when I think NFS:HP is MUCH better anyway. Oh well, I'll repost yet again with results.

Hmm.. just curious, go into DXDIAG (start-run -> dxdiag) and see
if everything is enabled..

Yeap. DXDIAG was the first thing I tried checking since I know DirectX has had it's buggy moments over the years. Thanks for the suggestion though Mystik.

yeppers...

yeppers...

Yeap, and it's the weirdest thing I've seen in a while. I play the following with absolutely NO problems:

NBA Live 2000 and 2001
Madden 2000 and 2001
Superbike 2000
NFS:SE and NFS:HP
Descent 2 and Descent III

I have many more, but these are the ones that get more play than any other. Lately, Live 2001 has had most of my attention, while the NFS series has faded. But after basketball season hits the playoffs in June, I'll be doing more driving. I seem to wanna play sports game more when the season for that sport is going on.

Very vexing!

Satnetwork, I feel your pain. I wish I can help, since the very same thing happened to me - right after the intro movie, the black screen, and then the game would crash. Have you tried running the game in Win98 compatibility as well?
