New Voodoo4 & 5 drivers with HSR

Over at www.anandtech.com Anand has posted a nice review of the new Voodoo 4 and 5 drivers and goes rather in depth to HSR...

With HSR enabled the Voodoo5 AND 4 both kick hairy money a$$!! Surpassing the GeForce2 in fps in Q3A...

One catch.. HSR is rather buggy (almost unplayable in some cases).. But then again, since most people here would rather have a new driver every other hour on the hour without exception.. well now you know why some companies (like ATi) are actually taking their time to make sure it actually works!!

This gives me new hope for the new ATi drivers.. And perhaps the reason ATi is taking their time is so they can avoid the problems that are showing their head with the new 3dfx drivers...

Any way.. It's good reading, especially if you're not up to snuff on HSR...

That makes me feel bad about ATi...not good. Everyones releasing new solutions, and ATi releases nothing. I mean, HSR is something...its not perfect, but it shows that 3dfx isnt just sitting around. They're doing something. ATi hasn't done sh*t. I'd rather have some new drivers in a timely fashion (which may be buggy but eventually get fixed) than new drivers every 4 months.

FarENheiT,

Have you actually looked at Anandtech's article about HSR? It looks like donkey doo doo... all that 3DFX is doing is removing polygons... and look what it does... removes floors, walls, guns... yeah that is the technolgy I want for my card.

As for passing the GeForce2 GTS in performance... Well it does stand to reason that your performance will increase 2X if you remove half of the polygons from the screen...

"oops, you mean you need that poly to see the bridge... sorry... but look at the FPS..."

Sigh... yawn... need.. sleep...

ATI already has HSR, really people read up. The reason it doesn't give as big of a performance boost is ATI wants you to be able to see the polys you need to see!

I have a link wayyyyyy back in news history to pics of HSR in Q3...saw some at Anandtech, but these were posted about three weeks before.

In 3dfiles.com msg board. I hope the link still works though. Contact me for it cause I'll have to scrounge through history.

jeezz, which one would u rather have??

1. "ooohh, look at all those hidden surfaces, they're textured."
or
2. "Look my FPS improved.."

ATI is too slow.. they probably have HSR drivers in 2-3months time... Voodoo's HSR drivers are not official yet.. its a mere registery tweak as of now.. thats why its horrible..

I know this is stating the obvious, but high FPS are useless if the game is unplayable. If 3dfx can pull off a revision of HSR that inproves performance AND is actually usable (and works in games other than Quake 3), then ATi might have to start worrying. But, as things stand, I still know which card I'd rather own (I'm talking about the Radeon here, by the way ;) ).

Personally, I thought the videos showing what HSR did in Quake 3 over at Anandtech were hilarious. :D
