New gaming PC build for my son

Is PBO enabled or not?

Them ryzens tend to go wild temperature wise as soon as you enable that, and the fact that you have the worst version of the amd stock cooler probably isn't helping.

Looks dope. Why is the little card sagging (or is it picture angle)? Or it might be the power cable is tight on it. Maybe worth a double check if you see the sag as well.

The GPU? I think its just the picture (I know its a bad pic). It is not sagging in person. Or if it is its very slight. I'm not that concerned with GPU sag though, unless its really bad. Also yeah I made sure the VGA power cable was not pulling on it.

He did a pretty good job with cable management but I also helped him with that.

I bet the kid is ****ing pumped :D

Oh yeah for sure. The look on his face when seeing how quick the PC and his games boot up now with an SSD was priceless. :)

That's an OC setting so it should be disabled by default right? We didn't mess with any BIOS settings aside from enabling the XMP memory profile. Honestly I think this is just normal temps for this CPU with stock cooler. But it does get pretty close to throttling temps so I will likely get an aftermarket cooler for him.

[EDIT] Oh yeah, and we also set some more aggressive fan curves in the BIOS smart fan page.

Hmm, I just remembered my 3700X came with the wraith prism cooler which is way better. It has copper base and heat pipes. Maybe I'll install that and see if its good enough.

Got the wraith prism swapped in, but man it did not go smoothly.

When I unscrewed the stealth heatsink it would not come off. I gave it a good yank and the CPU came right out the socket and was stuck to the bottom of the heatsink. :bleh: Had to use my wife's hair dryer to heat up the compound and then it slid right off.

Lesson learned - don't use the stock compound AMD put on the heatsinks. I had a small amount of Noctua NT-H1 but I didn't want to use it for this build. Should have just used it originally. But on the other hand I wouldn't have had enough to apply to the prism heatsink today.

In the end though all is good and its working fine. CPU or socket was not damaged. I will say though, the prism heatsink was a bitch to install. Had to remove the video card to get both sides clamped on. Temps are definitely improved after some test gaming for a bit. CPU was getting up to 84C in Elden Ring with the stealth, now it tops out at 72C with the prism. Definitely worth the effort.

Another bonus, he has some RGB now.

How? Shouldnt the CPU have been locked down?

Solid!

You got PGA:ed.

I'm glad that AMD is going LGA with am5, as nothing nasty will happen if you forgot to twist the heatsink or don't twist it enough, and it is also kind of annoying that it is pretty risky to remove the heatsink from a cold system.

I know what you mean about the stock AMD paste though, I also ripped my 3900x from the socket with the stock cooler.

Well it has that lever you push down on the socket, but it doesn't really hold it in place like Intel CPUs that use the LGA socket type and that bracket that comes down over the CPU. So yeah, if the thermal paste is stuck good enough you can absolutely rip the CPU out when pulling the heatsink off. Scary stuff let me tell you.

Yeah, it was a cold system. Had not been on since 8PM last night. I should have known better but it simply didn't cross my mind the paste could be like cement because it was cold.

Also about twisting on the heatsink during installation, I don't think that really works when using the stock compound that's already applied by AMD. I tried twisting it a bit but it wasn't soft enough like the compound you squeeze out of a syringe is. All in all it was a scary incident but turned out OK in the end. No damage thankfully.

And holy crap you did that with a 3900X?! Much more expensive CPU and I would have been stressing big time. Was everything still OK with it afterwards?

Yeah, it was fine, I guess that is one advantage PGA has over LGA, it is harder to damage the pins.

Good to hear it was fine.

I'd still much prefer pins being on the motherboard (LGA) though, since CPUs are generally more expensive than the motherboard.

Snapped a few clearer pictures of my son's PC.

I actually really like this Fractal Focus G case. For the money its pretty damn good. Not sure you'll find a better case for $55 right now. My son wanted it in white. Personally I would have went with a different color, but its growing on me I kind of like it. Contrasts nice with the black components.

Fantastic
I love that you let him select the case, that little personal touch does have meaning. He should be happy and proud of the way it cane out.

Thanks! Yeah he did a good job. Installed most components himself and didn't break anything.

I was thrilled and a proud dad when it fired up on the first try.

this is basically a dream setup for me. i've had my cpu+mobo combo for like 6ish years. maybe will upgrade in the summer within the next month or so... glad to hear everything went smooth for you. I'd also go with air cooling. just seems more reliable (less moving parts) and better for keeping my stuff going for years.

I think now is probably the best time in the past couple years to build a PC. Mainly because pricing (and availability) of GPUs is finally pretty much back to normal. We built this PC for $1100 which I thought was pretty reasonable.

Yeah I'm always going with air cooling. Just more reliable since fans are the only moving part that will fail, and is easy/cheap to replace. Also, performance is pretty much right there compared to any similar priced AIO. Of course in this case we went with the stock AMD cooler though, which was pretty borderline in performance, until I remembered I still had the better AMD heatsink unused from my 3700X. The wraith prism works surprisingly well! I think it tops out around 70C while gaming with a good fan curve set. That's a good temp for the 5600X.

Awesome. It looks really nice too :)

Thanks. It actually does. :)

damnit you know exactly what to say to nudge me towards the right direction...

if im gaming (more casually nowadays) at 1440p and occasionally at 165hz competitive FPS, would a modern CPU/RAM and 2080ti still cut it, or I could sell it and offset the price of a new high end card for the next 4-5+ years.

Other people's opinion here might be different, but personally I think the 2080 Ti is still a totally capable GPU. Especially if you are not at 4k res.

Looking at your specs, if you really have the upgrade bug maybe just start looking into a new CPU/motherboard. But you can definitely still continue using everything else.

I'd start with CPU reviews with benchmarks that include your 6700K so you can compare. Then decide if the performance boost is worth it to you. At the end of the day though I wouldn't bother unless you are currently playing certain games that the performance is not meeting your personal standards.
