New Drivers cause sheen in water and sky

Installed new catalyst drivers then proceeded to shoot down some Russians in IL2 Sturmovik and the sky was all weird, looked like an oily sheen. Tried Silent Hunter II same thing and the water was like that to. Spent the last two days changing all sorts of settings also tried using Rage3D Tweak to no avail. Reinstalled 9031 drivers and everthing is back to normal. Any ideas?

Yeah, stick with the 9031's. I'm starting to think that the Catalyst drivers were prematurely released... I'll be switching back in a bit.

im glad i saw this,... been trying to think of a way to describe the problem all day hehe

I see the same problem on the walls in SOF2 (for sure on the first level, havent played it enough to be further yet) and on the pitch in Fifa 2002 WC.

1) Do you guys have no tweakers installed (perhaps even Powerstrip might interfere), or atleast made sure you have installed Rage3D 3.3 Tweak properly as your only tweaker?

2) Did you do a clean install (which doesn't require reinstalling windows, look up Candyman's thread) of your drivers?

Before you pass judgement, I think you should make sure that, since these drivers changed in operation notably from previous versions, that these issues aren't related to something else you are doing. I haven't encounteered any problems at all yet.

Both valid points Demalion, but yes I did a clean install and used Rage3d tweak 3.3 I do believe it is a change in one of the settings but not sure which one, I haven't given up yet!

Care to show a screenie or something?. I'm playing IL-2 too. No probs so far with the game. My setup is as follows:

AMD Athlon XP 1900+
ABIT KR7A-Raid
256mb DDR SDRAM
30gig ATA-100 HDD (Master)
40gig ATA-133 HDD (Slave)
ATi Radeon 8500 (Retail)
Creative Audigy DE
12x Asustek DVD-Rom
50x Asustek CD-Rom
Win98SE
WinXP HE

Playing the game in WinXP though :).

Baal thats great its working fine for you I went back to the 9031 drivers maybe tomorrow I will feel brave and reinstall them and post a screen shot.

I'm not sure my screen shots will show up distorted. With the 9039 drivers the screenshots of IL2 were distorted. I switched back to the 9031 to show a comparison. The screenshots I took previously from the 9039 drivers drivers looked fine just like the ones from the 9031 drivers. So I'm not sure what to make of it!

Hummm .... ;-)

So you have a BMP file that looks distorted when viewed with a 9039 driver, but the same BMP looks fine with the 9031 driver? I hope someone has an explanation!

Ozo8500

Yes Ozo8500 that is exactly what I'm saying. Also the 2431 Omega drivers did the same thing as the 9039 until I changed the "Dithering method when alpha blending setting" to "Use error diffusion dithering." Tried changing the settings in the 9039 but didn't make a difference.

In IL2 it seems to effect the sky and clouds and SHII it effects the water along with the sky and clouds. The water looks polluted it has an oilly look to it. The sky and clouds seem to blend together with slightly distorted colors. I know this probably doesn't help, I'm not sure how to describe it. You can compare it to that filmy look on the top of your Chicken Soup!

Nice screenshot thats what mine looks like when I use any drivers other than the catalyst 9039 drivers.

I get this in all Quake 3 engine based games. It's apparently an OpenGL dithering bug with ATI and Q3 based games according to responses to my queries on this problem in the stickied Catalyst thread. And to make it worse the usual fix of selecting 'Disable Dithering While Alpha Blending' isn't working either!
