So I will probably build another system this summer with the advent of AM4 and 400 series coming out...

Having said this, my rig from 2012: Sabertooth FX990 2.0, Gigabyte 7870 OC and AMD 8350
has been ULTRA reliable and I never crash even once.

However, I heard that Asus took a downturn in terms of reliability and support.

Can you guys confirm of deny?

When mobo would you recommend for reliability only.
Can I still count on Asus?

The problem with modern motherboards is that for a given platform most manufacturers make 10+ mobos to fit different segments. If you want reliable go with Asus WS line of boards.

I bought asus z87-a boards the last two times and worked fine for me.
the new zen changes the power requirements....a bit so I assume it be great with any manufacturer.
