Metro Exodus

Looks like a Metro 2033 film has been announced and due for release in 2022.

I wonder if we all need to upgrade our eye balls to support Ray Tracing global illumination... :bleh:

Two Colonels is only 2 hours long? :bleh:

More or less. Though I did enjoy it myself but at this point it is more of a walking simulator. Still, tighter experience than the open world parts of the main game as this focuses completely in the metro and introduces a new weapon.

Well I finally played it after being huge fan of Last Light. Exodus definitely has some good moments but overall a step back from LL. I think 4A are def stronger with more linear stuff.

I liked the start and the Volga (snow) level was probably the best part of all. Both Volga and Caspian (desert) feel like stalker but with some linear bits in between. Anything that compares to stalker is automatically up there for me. Pretty much any of the levels with Anna were fun because she basically can't stop thanking you for saving her. Most of the weapons felt pretty good and I liked the pneumatic ball bearing gun for a bit of sneaky beaky action against mutants or humans. Resource management was alright, although I never really felt like I had ample even after doing a lot of melee takedowns.

It's cool how the train changes / upgrades and you see little stories there between the main levels. Good way to show progression and get you knowing the characters. Plus I generally liked how they put together the good and bad endings, it's not too stringent and not that hard to get the good ending.

Game unfortunately had a big quality drop after it hits the Taiga forest area. Minor spoilers below.

The game takes your weapons and put you in a cramped, clumsy partially linear zone to avoid tribal guards. Yes you get a crossbow the stealth is not very good. Areas are too open, navigation is poor, vision is bad (even with NV goggles). This entire level felt like it was rushed out the door and/or cut down from something bigger. The final moments put you against the stupid bear as seen in the trailer, which was just dumb.

The last level started promising (radioactive dead city with corpses) but is waaaaaaaaay too drawn out for it's own good. There are dozens of these slugs on walls that shoot things at you. Most annoying enemies ever. The serpents in the water were too prevalent and annoying too. Plus Artyom gets visions that make him pause. Then you have a couple of apes to fight and one of the longest final scenes in the history of video games.

I would say in general it is too clunky and not polished enough for an open world game. The last few levels were too rushed. The van you get in the second area drives so ****ing slow, the boats paddle slow, every animation is like pulling teeth. You can't even climb over a lot of small obstacles smoothly. Underground and in close it makes sense but in these big expanses it just gets in the way of exploring and moving about. There were a lot of rough spots in the open levels too, like rocks floating in mid air. Also, Artyom definitely needed to speak in this one. It's basically open world rpg lite and he goes to somebody to ask for their help and says nothing until they agree to help? LOL? QUE? Previous games they got away with it but not here.

The windows store version was... glitchy. Can't skip the long intro video. Game would "Apply settings" every time I started it, which took like 5 minutes. Performance was merely okay on High settings. Dx12 was locked (couldn't change to dx11). The save system is utter trash--it basically cycles between 3 autosaves on a continuous basis (every 3-5 mins??) and quick save just replaces them. If you take your time in an area you'll just have 3 saves that are basically the same. One quick save was just before the entire bandit camp opened fire on my ass. JUST LET ME SAVE ANYWHERE YOU SLIMY DOGS.

Overall 8/10 maybe.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll pick it up now. I plan to start in on it some time this year when 3080TI is released.

Well, I had caught up on all my games just in time before Cyberpunk was going to be released next week but of course its been delayed so needed a new game to hold me over. Decided to pick up Metro Exodus since Fanatical had it for $16 and its a nice RTX/DLSS game to make use of my new 3080.

Will be starting this tonight and should have time to finish it up by the time Cyberpunk releases. I always play Metro games on hardcore difficulty for the scarce ammo making the game feel more tense, almost like a survival horror. Can I assume hardcore difficulty in Exodus lives up to the previous games?

Perfect title! DLSS only 1.0 so image is not as crisp as 2.0 but still a showcase RTX title for me.

Ah that's right, this is a DLSS 1.0 title. In that case I will compare DLSS on/off and if with off visuals are noticeably better and performance is still smooth I will play with it off.

I did a single benchmark run last night and I think my average fps with ultra settings using DLSS was in the 70's so we will have to see how it is without DLSS.

It is demanding on the FPS....

That's OK, I don't mind turning down some settings if need be.

If DLSS looks unacceptable I'll lower resolution scaling which I believe is the "Shading Rate" setting in Exodus. But yeah this is the reason I did not want to go 4K yet.

Runs fantastic at 3840x1600 completely maxed with no DLSS, so your 3440x1440 should have no issue.

Enjoy that high refresh rate smoothness!

Thanks.

It is definitely nice, have to admit. If anything its great not to need vsync enabled anymore to get rid of tearing. The CPU gets a good workout now though with the higher fps.

Yeah, game does run great for me at 3440x1440. Getting smooth framerate between 65-100 fps.

Ultra quality,
Ultra Ray Tracing,
DLSS off,
Hairworks and Tessellation on,
Texture Filtering AF 16x,
Shading rate 1.0x

Cool game so far, just finished the opening Moscow level, playing on Hardcore difficulty. It did feel heavily scripted though, but I assume its just to introduce the characters and setting. Seems like its about to open up to the main gameplay. Only issue I had was I wanted to adjust the FOV. No option so I went to change it in the config file. It worked and I got the FOV setting I wanted but it breaks the damage/health overlay and messes with the player character model. Ah well, 60 FOV is not ideal for my preference but I'll deal with it.
