Media Server to Roku Problems

Picked up a couple of 32" Insignia TVs w/ built in Roku for the older two kids' rooms. Set one up today, works great except....

using the Roku media player to access files on my network using "Universal Media Server" (formerly known as ps3mediaserver) gives me no results. I can browse the folders by name, but get a "no playable files found" or some message like that in each folder. Same whether the files are x.264 mkv files or old mpeg or avi files.

Plug in a USB stick with the same files and it plays them w/ no problem.

Anyone had similar issue?

EDIT: OK, while typing all that I realized the problem will be with the UMS config files, not the Roku. I had been looking in the Roku forums withouth success, just went to the UMS forums and found a lot of discussion about this....(but no solution yet)

Security issue? I've ran into an issue with Plex Media Server on my Vizio TV having an out of date security certificate. Therefore secure (e.g., https) requests failed. I had to force non-secure connections on local network.

I'm not familiar with your server, but I'm guessing it's just a generic DLNA server. Other than that, maybe there is a file support issue. Not all media players are equal. Transcoding of file formats for which the player cannot natively play requires some sort of profile setup on the server side.

Thanks for the response!

I really dislike Plex due to the fact that you can't browse by folder (at least I have never been able to get it to) but I installed it when i read that the Roku has a Plex app. I can see the files from the TV, but can't play anyhing (it says "retrieving file" and then gets stuck).

Think I will look for a deal on a couple of 256gb flash drives (or a couple of cheap externals off ebay)

Mother @#$%@#$#@$@# piece of @#$%@#$%#$%!!!!

Well, it appears this subforum is practically dead, but anyway....

discovered this thing chokes on multichannel audio...which means use a transcoding media server or re-code a few hundred files manually (LOL).

How in the hell was the WDTV able to play EVERYTHING (then and today) five years ago and new stuff today still can't do it?!?!?:mad::mad:

I don't know how the stand-alone Roku units are, but I give this integrated one ZERO out of five stars. If a best buy were anywhere close, I'd return them for the non-"smart" version which are $20 cheaper. As is, it's not worth it.

Pieces of ****ing ****. You get what you pay for.

Found the WDTV in the closet and got it out a couple of weeks ago for one of the TVs and it still works flawlessly. HOWEVER....

I was looking on ebay for another and still kept having the fact that I couldn't get this stupid thing to work right bother me. So today I downloaded Serviio Media Server again (I tried it a year or so ago, found it to be OK)...

made sure the transcoding box was checked along with the "downmix to stereo"....fired it all up and I got video but no audio. Same damn problem I had with files I tried to play from a USB stick.

I wondered "what if", went in, unchecked the downmix bos and set it to leave stream as original, and WTF?!? It's playing everything fine, from 2 channel home movies to DTS mkv files.

Only took 3 weeks to get the **** straight.

:D

Want to make sure I'm reading this right. In this paragraph, you're saying you're testing the Plex app and its not working properly (can't play anything ...)?

You can indeed browse by folder. Well, subfolders of whichever folders you set up in X Library. For example, I set up a "Home Videos" library, and can view this library by folders. When I do this, I see and can browse into the subfolders (years > months etc in this case).

Highly highly recommend Plex. I too used PS3MediaServer for some years, but moved to Plex when I got our Roku. I even had one of those WDTV units as well lol.

Yep, running Plex serve and the Plex app on the TV wouldn't work. PS3MS (now knownn as UMS) wouldn't work either, I tried endless config settings on both. So I had given up. For whatever reason, Serviio works great, though.

Samsung ConnectShare has really spoiled me, though...these cheapo Insignias are S-L-O-W when changing apps or loading folders when browsing. But they were about half the price of same size Sammys, so...

All's well that ends well, I guess.
