LG Sound Sync

For the optical port version, does this actually require a compatible soundbar? Or does the tv control the optical output no matter what it's connected to and therefore a bunch of marketing BS?

I'd like a cheaper soundbar to improve how audible speech is in the living room from the terrible down facing speakers, but I don't want to spend dumb amounts of money when i have a "theater" in the game room.

My search engine results tell me that LG Sound Sync is a proprietary wireless connection method for compatible LG sound bars. It shouldn't have anything to do with an optical/TOSLINK connection. On the TVs I've encountered the digital audio output is always active, and should work with any sound bar with a standard digital audio input.
