Latest Avast -- major issues

I just updated to latest version of Avast 12.2.2276 and upon restarting, it tells me I'm unprotected. Prompts me to "resolve all", which I clicked on to no avail. I then check the status and it says released 12-1969?????

Updating virus definitions weren't working either. I then did numerous uninstalls, restarts, and reinstalls. Same issue every time.

Finally I gave up and looked for the previous version, installed, and is working perfectly fine.

So to anyone using Avast, I advise that you do not update the program until they fix (which I hope is ASAP).

Just tried installing latest version again, and it seems to be fixed now (this issue was also confirmed on the avast forums)....

Unfortunately Avast is turning into bloatware. It wants to take over everything like Norton used to do. Its' still one of the best free av solutions but its almost not worth it on Win 10.

Uninstall or change a program > Find Avast > Click change > uncheck the bloat > ??? > donkey punch a hairless ferret > y u dp a ferret? > Profit

Unfortunately, with its new monthly update schedule Avast will insist that you're out-of-date and need to update to the latest version as soon as it's available-- even with current definitions. (I have the new silent update mechanism turned off so that I can update it manually because Avast is notorious for not honoring your custom install when it updates itself.) On previous versions you had at least a two-week window before Avast would cry foul over not upgrading to the latest release. Less than 24 hours after .2276 got pushed out, the system tray icon was alerting me that there was trouble.

Being the OCD weirdo I am, I reluctantly went ahead and updated so that the alert would go away. Not a good idea.

There was also an annoying bug where the UI just randomly opens on its own that somehow slipped through the cracks. This can steal focus from whatever else you're running (even a game). They said they would have that fixed post-haste, but as of last night it was still happening. Then after updating my NV drivers and rebooting, I noticed that I was getting the "unprotected" BS, too. Other than the UI randomly popping up, it was actually working fine for at least a day before doing that crap.

Basically, it looks like they got caught with their pants down and pushed an unstable release out into the channel in order to be ready for MS' coming-out party on August 2nd.

Avast has been on thin ice with me for close to a year now anyway, so I fixed it by doing a clean uninstall and installing NOD32. :bleh:

NOD is not what it used to be. I switched to Bitdefender ($) and haven't looked back since. Consult this page for other options.

Over the years, I've changed AVs like changing pants; I've gone to and from Norton and Avast Home at times, I've used MSE (when it was good), I've used NOD32 before it started to get bloated, and, more recently, I've used the paid AV-only version of Bitdefender.

However, over the past few months, I've gone from the paid Bitdefender AV-only package on all of my machines to installing Bitdefender AV Free on all of them on on all family/friend's machine that I support; the current beta version works fairly well, if just a little less polished than the paid version, but, under the hood, it's pretty much the same.

The current consensus seems to be that Bitdefender is the best... but the last time I tried run the trial version, it insisted on uninstalling Malwarebytes (the free version) and SpywareBlaster before it would even allow me the privilege. Neither one of those run resident, so I really don't understand why it felt the need to be so bitchy. Didn't make such a great first impression.

Plus I already had the license for NOD32, so it was good for a temporary stop-gap. I was just sick of Avast more than anything. I'll reconsider things next spring when it comes up for renewal.

I have been happy for the past couple of years with the free Comodo security suite, which is basically AV, sandbox, and firewall all in one. Besides unchecking geek buddy during installs and major updates, comodo has been nag free. I used to do the avast/comodo combo, but avast will download randomly named update executables and run them at login, which comodo would block and I would get into this weird black screen state since avast would just lock everything down unless it could run, so it got das boot.
