I haven’t gamed on a laptop in years, and haven’t kept up with PC gaming trends so I started looking stuff up and am posting it here for anyone else it might help out.

Mine runs hot, and I had my first lockup last night, so I’m hoping it’s just heat and can be dealt with through stuff like this.

Starting with Bob of all Trades mobile gpu undervolting guide.

If anyone else has tips to help us budget laptop guys out it would be appreciated.

Yep, mouse/keyboard.raised laptop all set, but I still haven’t tinkered with the bios or a re-install yet. I was looking at cooling pads though…seems this laptop is built to take advantage of a good cooling pad.

I wouldn’t try to mod a brand new laptop but ask for a replacement.

If it is overheating then clearly there is some manufacturing defect (can be just thermal pads or a malfunction in the fan or something else). Also mention which game caused the hard lock?

These large laptops will run hot if you are not keeping them on a cool surface (like marble, metal or wood). Don’t keep it on a cloth or actual lap.

Also try to play game without having the laptop plugged into the charging slot. If this is happening then again I would RMA since it means your laptop is unable to handle the extra heat due to charging.

Following on what KAC said you may want to consider doing an exchange at MC since you just got it.

I would check the BIOS config option to jack up the fan speed before returning it.

What game crashed it?

All good points KAC, thanks. To be clear it’s only crashed once. total gaming time on it is only about 3 hours, and I’ve updated the older NV drivers since then and had no crashes. Been so busy I forgot to update first thing :o

I’m not 100% sure it was heat as I could only go by feel at that point. By the time I alt-tabbed out and killed the game the fan was already slowing down.

It’s on a wooden desk, but I haven’t gotten the pads to prop is up yet, but that said, there isn’t much clearance underneath, so that may help. I’ll try it unplugged as well.

I’ll check the bios today, and will keep the RMA option in mind if there are any more issues. Nioh is the game that crashed it, and as I said to KAC I’m just guessing it was heat.

I’m going to have AB and/or HW monitor record the temps for a session and see what it’s getting to under load as well.

I also have to keep in mind that Nioh suffered from occasional lockups on my desktop pc as well….I’m just trying to be safe and cover all bases.

Really appreciate the input gents

Yeah, check out the temps. Mine GPU in the low 70s OCd to 2.2GHz

 That's next lol. I propped up the back of the laptop and set the fans to performance via the bios + overclocking. 30 minutes of idle shows 45c...I'll see what 30 minutes of Nioh does later. It's not a heavy title graphics wise, so hopefully those small changes handled it.

I Know its a gaming laptop and they tend to run hot, but honestly I would be surprised if Nioh was making it overheat.

Firstly, the game's framerate is capped at 60 which keeps the demand low for the processors. On my desktop system my GPU never goes above 55C when playing long sessions of Nioh.

Like already mentioned, I would definitely first monitor temps while gaming with AB and/or HW monitor to rule out overheating. If temps look OK might have just been the game crashing on you.

This, must try another game. I recommend Quake 2 RTX, that'll get the GPU warmed up.

Just did and overclocked it hit 72 max per HW monitor, AB reported 70.1 max. I'm beginning to think game or drivers, as it hasn't crashed since I installed the package from NV and cleaned out the stock delivered drivers it came with.

Fingers crossed lol.

If you need cheap Windows Key (just in case) there are tons of key sites w/ 10-15 buck windows pro (i.e., your laptop didn’t come with the key written somewhere).

There is a YouTube channel Designs by IFR that usually has an ad and info (in description of videos) on cheap windows cdkeys with promo codes.

Thanks but...did they remove the ability to make the USB media creation tool? That and my active MS account used to cover everything activation...
