Issues with z-buffers and radeon9700?

This kind of seems like an appropriate forum for my problem.

Has anyone ever ran into any problems with programs not working due to issues with zbuffers and radeon9700s?

Other ATI cards don't have any problems. It's not DX8/DX9 related because both have been tested. And various drivers from Cat2.4 to the newest Cat3.0's all seem to have the problem. It's something with the 9700 in particular but I'm yet to figure out the cause. I've also tried every driver setting I could find, including tweaking the registry to do so.

The game I'm having a problem with compiles correctly using DX8 or DX9 and runs on anything but a 9700. The issue seems to be related to sorting z buffers or something along those lines. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

The only issue regarding z-buffers that I've come across is that rendering the z-buffer to a texture while FSAA is on slow the program to a crawl. Turing off FSAA returned performance to what it should be.

The problem is with a game that's a couple years old now. Originally coded in DX6 and updated to DX7. It works fine with Nvidia cards and what seems like all ATI cards except the 9700. When launching in debug it gives a bunch of stuff about z buffers not sorting right etc. The 9700 in particular has to be doing something strange in regards to the z buffer.
