I just thought of something

nVidiaFX

I always hated that Glide was a proprietary API, but now that 3dfx is gone doesn't nVidia own Glide now? Does this mean the new nVidia cards will also have glide support? That would be awesome :)

(Of course that won't help ATI, but I don't think anyone can help them.)

I know, but it would be great for older games like Unreal, and other things that use it. No more stupid glide wrappers!

I just thought of something myself that is good for Nvidia. Not the fact that they have glide but the fact that they now have "hardware" FSAA. That is probably what they will utilize most.

I recently skimmed through a gamersdepot review of a geforce2 ultra board and in their list of features ( i assume come from the webpage or whatever)
It said:

-hardware FSAA

Many people here know its software so thats some big marketing BS that they threw in trick newbie customers.

back in the old days
3dfx made glide not as a std 3d api but
as a close to voodoo arc api so unless nvidia make their arc so it'll be like 3dfx's then it would be a wrapper anyway

glide is dead and thats a good thing imho
since a very close to the tech api is bad since it can keep the compatition out of the market, much you can say like dx is hurting beos linux and such since ms dont let it support other platforms then wintendo

opengl is the best api imho

so i really hope glide die's since it would not be much faster then the wrappers anyway and it would if used again hurt company's like aTI and matrox

hhhmm ok i may be a jerk but i'm a jedi jerk like my father was before me :)

3dfx made glide open source.
Nvidia doesnt own it.
However, this is not relevant as no one codes for glide anymore

I didn't know it was made open source; quite a few games still support it. Nascar 3, Deus Ex, all the Unreal engine games...I mostly want it for my older games that use it though. They look much better with it.

I admit when the radeon was first being introduced several months before it was released, ATI's pages were boasting FSAA like the rest of the new features... i was happy! since i thought they done it hardware mode... then as time went on, it was stated somewheres, that ati used the same fsaa render method as nvidia, hence fsaa in driver/software mode... not hardware... i wasn't too pleased.... but......

being that fsaa would be best in 16bit, 16bit isn't really relevant anymore for me..
as far i'm concerned, fsaa's useless to me on this k62 system...

there's my 2 cents...

Nvidia, ATI, and 3DFX ALL use hardware AA. The only difference between ATI + Nvidia Vs. 3Dfx is the way its done. ATI renders the scene in a higher resolution and then downsamples to your screen resolution, but 3Dfx calculates the scene 2 or 4 times and offsets each screen piece by a pixel or two and then combines them. Remember, just because something is enabled through software does not mean it isn't being done in hardware. If this were the case then all our cards would run w/o anything hardware related.

You can get a glide wrapper for any card, so ATI can have glide, and also glide is a hardware thing, it's done through the use of specific hardware.
