Hogwarts Legacy

Running this on a 12700K, 32Gb RAM, and RTX 4090 at 3440x1440 on an Alienware QD-OLED ultrawide. Yeah, I know, the 4090 doesn't usually break a sweat at this resolution, but Hogwarts Legacy + raytracing set to Ultra gives it a workout. I'm keeping DLSS off for now, just because the graphics are more crisp at native resolution, and I'm getting over 60fps with all graphics settings cranked to max. This game is drop-dead gorgeous and a lot of fun so far. I was a "Potterhead" in the 90s & 2000s so I'm loving this game.

what is all this game's controversy about? Explain like I'm 5.
Overblown, most people don't know or care. Author of the books said and did things insulting/offending the Transgender community, and (I think) also donates money to causes which try to restrict their rights. Some places/communities (eg. ResetEra (the most active english speaking gaming forum)) tried to spread a boycott and banned all discussion from it's forums. Rumour is that DF (digital foundry) won't be covering the game due to ResetEra's influence, the DF staff sometimes post there.

Key point: The Author of the books isn't involved in the making of the game in any way, other than (possibly) being paid some royalties or (maybe) some minor approvals here and there. Pretty much hands off. The game's story takes place 100 years before the books. So any boycott has no effect on the author but only on the team that made the game, who have distanced themselves from the Author in as neutral a way as they can.

That's pretty much it, some gaming websites mentioned these things in a couple small articles. A blip on the radar. The game seems to be selling well and broke Twitch's single-player viewer record, as well as is reviewing quite well. First decent HP game, it was gonna sell very very well no matter what.

I've been under a stone lately, what is all this game's controversy about? Explain like I'm 5.

TL;DR version:
JK Rowling disagrees with transgender definitions.
The alphabet group and their supporters want to cancel her and all things Wizarding World.
Also, anti-trans folks are annoyed by the gender-swapping you can do during character creation, and the fact that all of the dialogue in the game uses "they/them" pronouns.
Meanwhile those of us who just agree to "live and let live" are enjoying the hell out of the game.

Just to clarify, it wasnt just transgender stuff, it was the entire lgalphabet+ community. The whole thing was stupid, on both sides, but like above, it doesnt really have much to do with the game. As long as they didnt force any kind of crap in the game to be woke then there is nothing to worry about with the game, just play it and have fun.
However, there is some bad juju going on with people streaming the game and stuff. Girlfriend reviews had to quit streaming them playing the game less than ten minutes into their stream because they were getting attacked enough for girlfriend to start crying. Some people are just arseholes. It doesnt really have anything to do with actual morales.

As beautiful as the game is, the facial animations could use some work. Plus, is it just me or are the voices slightly out of sync with the lips during cutscenes? Just very slight, like half a second or maybe less, but it's enough to be noticeable.

I've spent the last hour walking around the castle casting Revelio every 10 feet and petting all the cats.

interesting. i only watched the intro and a little gameplay, cause i didnt want to spoil to much, but the facial animations looked great, and the lip sync was pretty damn nice. I wonder if its frame rate related, or has something to do with the problems they have been having on pc? like how dark souls 1 weapon durability was tied to the frame rate, so increasing frame rate made weapons break quicker, kind of thing.

I turned on V-Sync and that seems to have solved the lipsynching issue, for me at least.

No fullscreen so stuck at 1440P and can't use DL DSR. Might use the ini trick. Positive side with frame gen I can run 240 fps in this game maxed out at 1440P.
Runs smooth. Going to my first class after about 58 mins in.

Runs like a turd for me.

Granted the 3900X and 3080 are a few years old but can't hold 60fps in the nearby town, and exploring the school is a nightmare with framerates all over the place.

The opening scenes ran fantastic, 120fps, then you get to the open world sections and it's horrible,

Runs fine for me. Frame gen on. 1440P maxed out. 240 fps indoors. About 150-170 outdoors with some dips to 130 fps when spells are being casted and nubs being boned.

Totally depends on your settings. If you're trying to run above 1080p with ultra settings + ray tracing, then yeah, you're going to have low fps. Lots of settings you can adjust to find a playable framerate.

It's not even 1080p with DLSS, it's 1996*836, Ray Tracing is not enabled and the settings make very little difference to areas were the performance drops and stutters.

The town area is CPU limited, no idea why... It's not like games haven't done towns, cities and crowds before with much slower CPU's. Apparently that's a thing now, same with the new version of the Witcher 3.

Yeah I've heard that some areas are pretty CPU-bound, but when you look at the overall CPU utilization it's usually not above 75%. Hopefully the developers will optimize it a bit more and put out a patch. How much VRAM do you have? This game really needs 12GB+ VRAM.

16GB, I'm just leaving everything on high for now, dropping to medium doesn't really help matters.

I've been monitoring ram usage, sometimes very high with 95%, but then drops off to 55%, much like the framerate, it's all over the place.
