I would like to learn JAVA well enough to teach it. Anyone use(d) a SPOT? Are there better hardware/sensor trainers out there?

I would recommend learning to write software for Android phones. Maybe some old Nexus devices. Main reason is that anyone is a mobile phone platform is going to be a lot more common in the real world than a Sun Spot. Additionally, a mobile phone has a lot of built in sensors like compass, acceleration and GPS as well as several options for wireless data. Another advantage is that the community writing software for mobile phones is huge.

As an example of what you can do with a phone, my brother is currently working on a UAV using an Android phone that connects over cellular through a VPN network to a control station. It is a work in progress, but I have seen some of what he has done so far and it is very cool.
