i just got this game from a friend cuz i've been meaning to play it a long time ago but didn't have the chance. i'm getting really pissed at this game. i really like it, but it ALWAYS crashes at certain points in the game. i'm not very far in the game. i'm currently in the 2nd mission (the part in hell's kitchen before going to the generator). one of the places that it crashes is in hell's kitchen where u can go to some weapon's dealer near the subway. u gotta give a password to get in(bloodshot i think). now the screwed up part is that when i press this button near the door, the screen turns black, i see on the bottom of my screen say "What's the password" or something like that (i can hear the gaurd saying it too) and then THE GAME CRASHES and it stops responding.
it also happens i'm trying to get in the warehouse w/ the generator. it'll just crash (screen turning black) when i get to the roof.

first i thought it might be cuz my vid card (radeon 32mb DDR LE) only has 32mb of ram(maybe it wasnt' enough) but i looked at the readme (by the way, the version i have is the the "game of the year" version) and it says it can run on cards w/ 16mb of ram.

i've tried it on win98 and winXP, and it happens on both OS's. so far i've used the 9021, 9016 for win98 and 6025, 6015, 6052 for winXP. i've also used tried using omega's latest drivers but no luck. i did a clean install of drivers each time i tried a new driver as well.

does anyone know what could be wrong, i really like this game(aside from the crappy AI). i really don't wanna format my pc cuz i got some important stuff i can't delete and i got nothing to back it up w/ right now. any help would be appreciated....

some system specs:
mobo- ECS K7VMA (using the via km133/686b chipset)
1 Ghz AMD T-Bird
384mb pc-133 sdram
sb live value
radeon 32mb DDR LE (not oc'd right now cuz of deux ex)
win98/XP dual boot

I played that game on a Voodoo3 way back when, so I know your video card isn't the problem. I'm thinking there's something wrong with a couple of your files. You might try reinstalling the game (install it over itself). If it's the GotY edition, there probably aren't any patches for it, but you could check and see.

The AI makes me laugh sometimes. Find a good hiding spot, equip your tranquelizer darts, shoot a guard, then go hide. After a while, the guard passes out and the other guards stop looking for you. :) I like to go through entire levels just using the tranquilzer darts. :D

i've tried re-installing already.....:(

i've tried re-installing already.....:(

ya i've tried to re-install the game so many times already. i've even copied all the cd files onto my HD and installed from there (just in case for some unthinkable reason, my cd-rom wasn't reading all the files). it never did a thing.
i started to think my card may be broken about a few days ago, but i installed medal of honor again and it ran fine (w/ the default settings the game assigned) while playing the omaha beach scene. By the way, i've tried deus ex under d3d, ogl, and software and they all have the same problem. i'm beginning to think its my pc. i might just wait till i can format my pc.

lol the AI us halarious. I noticed this funny thing later in the game (i went to my friend's house to play it). if you're high enough (like up on a second floor or something) and u drop a pillow on the first floor, it SHATTERS!??!???? lol, since when does a pillow SHATTER?
Anyway if anybody has any other ideas about my problem, just tell me. if i don't get anything else, i'll probably just format my pc later. thanx in advance...

I didn't notice if you said you patched it? I think the unpatched state of the game is pretty unstable. I played it all the way through mostly on 9016, I think...and I think I finished it with 9021. Maybe 9017 was in there too. In any case, didn't have crashing problems that I remember (never ran it unpatched), even though I had tweaked graphical settings for highest quality graphics. The worst thing I remember is complete loss of textures...I had problems with 9016 and I think that was one of them. I have such a strong impression of 9016 instability, that it may have caused me some crashes and it simply doesn't stick in memory.

Oh, I used OpenGL.

yup its patched

yup its patched

since i got the game of the year edition, its already patched (version 1.112fm is the newest version i think).
thnx for pointing it out though, i forgot to mention that.....

Dues Ex is an awesome game one of the best action games of all time cetainly from a single player standpoint. The only drawback to the game is that it's a system pig.

This is probably a stupid question to ask but I assume you have the latest 4 in 1 drivers for your mobo chipset. If that's the case your system specs should be able to run Dues Ex in software rendering no problem...it's just not pretty.

I haven't played the newest release of the game but when it came out it ran better on my voodoo 2 SLI setup than on my buddies GeForce 2 setup and we had similar system specs eg: PIII 450 with 256M ram etc. Without glide Dues Ex clunks like byatch all I can suggest is lower screen res, then start lowering graphical options starting with trilinear texture filtering, use 16 bit textures but try to keep 32 bit colour, lower the bot textures but try to keep the world textures as high as possible and so on.

In the root of the Dues Ex directory is the game config file (as is the case with all UT engine games). Poke around in it with wordpad and you'll find a section that pertains to the type of video acceleration you are using. Below this are all the video settings some of which are not available in game.

If it still keeps crashing check your IRQ's with device manager if anything is sharing an IRQ with the video card this can cause a problem. Also maybe try turning off some of the more sophisticated features of the Radeon like "table fog" in D3D, and "hierarchical z" in OGL depending on which acceleration you use.

I hope you get the game running it's defintely worth it.

It's spelled Deus Ex, btw

It's spelled Deus Ex, btw

Deus Ex has a great storyline and the multiple story paths were ingeniously crafted, but the code for this game sucks. I hear you, things crash for no apparent reason. The OpenGL mode is also virtually unusable. Sometimes, the game doesn't realize I have accomplished an objective when I did, and I was unable to continue on. Just reload an older save game, and redo it all over again.

If an older save game (save often!) still won't work, there is another way into that guy's lair. Go to the basketball court behind the subway entrance and through an alleyway on your left. You can smash open the back of a cargo container, and inside is a ladder you can climb down into this guy's pad. Enjoy!

gonna try formatting next week....

gonna try formatting next week....

i'll probably try formatting my pc next week, when i actually have time.
zortag, i do have the latest 4-in-1's. i hear what ur saying, as with any UT engine game, glide is the way to go. and i have lowered my settings (to the point where i have almost everything set to low) and the problem still happens (even in software :)). i also checked for any irq conflicts and there aren't any.
thanx for that tip quanta, i'm curious as to what i can find there.

once i get time next week, i'll try deus ex w/ clean slate. i'll post whatever i find once i do that. thnx for all the help...

Good luck!

Good luck!

Don't know if this is related to your problem, but I had the objective "Broadcast satellite message to NSF" (which you achieve by doing something in the warehouse /w the generator) stuck in my objectives screen for the ENTIRE game...that's right, after I completed it. Thank goodness the game allowed me to finish without this objective ticked off, or *I* would be ticked off...
