Yes, Xen was pretty tough. I forgot the name of the weapon, but I turned around backwards and used alt fire to propelle backwards. You
You were using the Gauss gun, and you were gauss jumping (like Q3A's rocket jumping). Cheating is risky in HL, because the game heavily relies on triggers, and if you miss one (by clipping, not picking up an item) you may not be able to continue.
I find that usually, I would give up on a game if a) it was boring (ie., Tomb Raider 3), b) some bug prevented me from going on (ST
S9 Harbinger). If I was ever stuck gameplay-wise, I'd just shut the game off and do something else for the rest of the day. Eventually, the solution occurs to you. If that fails, there's always GameFAQs.
I was once stuck in HL as well, in the part where you run away from the Garguantua in the parking garage, and finally use airstrikes to destroy it. You are supposed to use an airstrike to blast this tower, which will keel over and create a makeshift bridge for you to get over the other side of a ditch to the next level. Thing is, it wouldn't blow up, so I was forced to use noclip.
