GTA3 and Horrid fog

I rather stupidly installed the Q318966 Update to the GDI for WinXP by Microsoft and after about 5 minutes of play I get this THICK foggy effect in GTA3. I've uninstalled this using the add/remove programs but it didn't change a thing. Also installed the catalyst 2.1 drivers and that made the game a little choppy. So does any body know what files the Q318966 update replaces, So i can get them from a different Install of windows.

Somehow I don't think it the weather it's like solid bluey/white more white I can just about see the front of my car and no buildings. I never see it before in all the weeks of playing. I know this game is just full of bugs but it was running rather nice for me up until the update on Micro$ofts site.

I have the same problem but in my case.... the game was working fine until I installed the new drivers... now I see thick smoke. And yes I did install the MS patch but only after I saw the problem occuring. Didnt help. With the new drivers GTA3 is running a little smother, but whenever the smoke comes I have to stop my car and wait until it goes away....

Seems like more bugs with the new release of drivers.

Same thing here

Same thing here

I just installed the new drivers and alas I have the same problem as well. I think its when it starts to get dark out that's when you start getting the fog. You would think that ATI would test a few COMON games before releasing new drivers to make sure there were no OBVIOUS problems with them but oh well.. I'm sure its nothing major, a minor updated drive should fix it. Thankfully its not the only game I'm playing right now :D

how can everybody who's asked this question about GTA3 fog have missed the 1/2 dozen posts regarding a fix

because ppl are too damn lazy to read or use the SEARCH function. and once again ppl yes the Table fog is a driver problem that is easily fixable, but the shitty performance itself is because GTA3 is the shittest PC port on the face of the planet. i never thought anything could beat out Red Fuction for that crown.

No you are wrong, Take 2 Games said it was all ATI's fault, so you can take that to the bank. Apparently the legions of Nvidia users posting the same problems on the GTA3 forums are also wrong.

Take 2 must be taking it's cue from Lionhead, makers of other ridiculously over-hyped, under-developed crap games. I saw Creature Isle for $15 new the other day, I hope that's because no one is buying it.

I hope both companies get warezed into bankruptcy before they strike again.

tried the things in the that thread apart from "ExportWBuffer = 0 (can make this change in ATI control panel)". In my D3D ATI Control panael I have
Support W-buffer = 0
Support 32-bit Z-buffer Enabled = 0
Alpha dithering = Error Diffusion
support DXT textures = 1
Alternative Pixel center = 0

there is NO "ExportWBuffer" option in there
and all the other option in that thread are set to 0
I got this foggy like effect BEFORE installing the new drivers, I installed the new drivers to see if it would get rid of it. Also the new drivers are a little wierd in PaintshopPro for me.

I had the same problem with thick fog. In other posts it suggested using the rage tweaker but that didnt work for me so I went in and manually changed the registry settings and everything's fine now. Stevvie, I dont know what OS you are running but the ExportWBuffer = 0 option is definitely there in XP.

EDIT: oops just re-read your post stevvie, I didnt try looking in the control panel for that option, just go straight into the registry and change it.

Skooby

Geeze, I don't see how all you people are having these problems with GTA3...

The ONLY problem I have, is with the headlights not glaring at night, etc... Seems ATi or R* will have to fix it.

Game works perfect with the Catalyst drivers as well.

Also, you guys should try using "alternate pixel center" with this game... It makes a world of difference, and makes it more like the PS2 version. Without it enabled, the blur effect doesn't work, and lighting is just all wrong.

i just installed them and i cant find ANY of those stupid registry settings. Why cant these stupid things just work. now i gotta go dload the 9031's again which will take 4 years because of ATI's 1.27kb/sec download that you have to restart every 2% to keep it downloading.

Just installed Rage3D Tweak 3.3 and this FIXES GTA3. It's now back to normal. Thanks for all the reply's. For some reason manually editing the Regestry didn't fix the fog for me but Rage3DTweak 3.3 did the trick.

What did you have to do with it? I just installed it but I still have the problem. :(

Geezus... I can't believe that this post came back. People, that's what the friggin SEARCH function is for.... anyways, as in my LAST POST about this problem... in the DirectX Tab, you'll notice some FOG entries... make sure that there ISN'T a CHECKMARK in the box. If there aren't any... you're good to go. Make sure you UNINSTALLED the old version of Rage3D TWEAK before you install the NEW CATALYST compatible RAGE3D TWEAK version.

Sidenote: With the leaked 6093 drivers and the R3DT fix, I noticed that the fog never did come back at all. It was always clear day and night... and I played it for a few hours. With the new Catalyst drivers and the new R3DT the fog came in around the 15 minute mark and it looks just like it did with the 6071 drivers. Framerate is up.. still slowsdown once in a while... especially when you take corners really hard and you run over a few people :) hehehe :evil:

Using Rage3D Tweak, the only way for fog to work correctly in GTA3 with the new drivers is to do the following:

open the tweaker
goto the Rage3D Tweak tab
open the 3D DirectX category
Click on table Table Fog, W Fog, and Z Fog tweaks until there is a green box around them and NO check mark by them. Then hit apply. (after you hit apply the green outline goes away, green just means you have changed it since you last applied settings).

Once you've set those 3, and made sure that there is no check mark (and no red box) by the "Enable W Buffer" tweak, your GTA3 should work ok for you.

I almost made a temporary "fix GTA3 fog" profile in the tweaker to make those changes for you automatically, but i ran out of time. Perhaps I'll do that later today and post it to a thread here which you can then import as a profile into your tweaker settings manually.

this is stupid i shouldnt have to run extra software to make the drivers work correctly. Where are theres registry settings. I used regedit and i cant find it anywhere.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{AB8E4442-8080-455A-8CE9-A4A867A0319A}\0000]

AND

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Video\{AB8E4442-8080-455A-8CE9-A4A867A0319A}\0000]

"TableFogEnable"="0"
"WfogEnable"="0"
"ZfogEnable"="0"
"ExportWBuffer"="0"

the Key "{AB8E4442-8080-455A-8CE9-A4A867A0319A}" may/will be different and some of the settings are NOT there by defualt.
