Going to Italy for two weeks... Need a camera...

Ok, so it's a school trip, going to look at architecture of the various times. I want something smaller, so it's easy to tote around with me, while I visit the various sites, and I want something that takes good pictures. I am trying to budget somewhere in the $500 to $600 range at the most.

I have settled on the Canon G16, fast and bright lense, fast camera overall, a good grip, and it seems to take really nice shots. I've got a price of $490 tax in from a authorized dealer. I've had Canon's in the past so I'm comfortable with the control system on them.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

The Sony RX100 is the king of p&s cameras in that range.

It crushes its enemies, and hears the lamentation of their tiny sensors.

Price crushes wallets! The lens is also kinda lame... :P

Also G1X with 1.5" sensor, crushes the paltry 1" in the Sony offering. So if I had that spare coin it would be between the G1X MK2 and the RX100 II.

:(

The g1x is the size and speed of a bus, the mkii only a little better. I dont know about the mkii, but the original g1x only scores a 60 in dxo. I hate to say it but I left canon because they did not keep up with sensor advancement.

If pocketability is no concern, then there are some aps-c mirrorless cameras around for under 500 that easily best those. But if you like canon, buy a g16 and be done, you will be pleased with your purchase.

I've been doing a lot of reading, and as long as you aren't too hot for sport photography, the mk2 is a very potent camera. Canon did a very impressive job of shrinking the G1X, speeding it up, and equipping it with a very good lense. Seems a lot of the hatred over the Mk2 is just people wanting to complain, I mean one thing that bums me out is that only the Euro version has the grip.

If I could spring for a $1300 portable I'd get an RX10, but at that $700 to $800 range, I would be hard pressed to take an RX100-II over the new G1X. Looking at the indoor and outdoor shots of both, considering the speed of both, and the price difference.

Here's the spec run down, it shows why the G1x MkII brings it to the RX100-II but the RX10 is still a more capable camera, for $500 more, though it damn well should be...

At the $500 range, it's hard, the biggest sensor you can get is the 1/1.7" sensor, with it's 12MP usable, or in the LX7's case 10MP...

It's just nasty how close the camera's are.

*sigh*

I haven't played with the mk2 yet, but I just hated the original for being soooo slow. The mk2 is well out of range anyway.

You can get a APS-C sensor for under $500. You can grab a Sony Nex5T for $500 on amazon right now. The kit lens isn't the greatest, it's a kit lens, but the sensor is such a god damned beast it makes up for it in spades. Down the line you can buy better lenses as well and even use manual legacy lenses with $15 adapters.

I see a camera as an investment, that's why I don't like these p&s cams anymore. It's too much trying to research what camera is good enough for right now until the next p&s cam comes out. Where investing in a good kit will tide you over for quite a while.

I seriously suggest going to a bestbuy or camera store and checkout a Nex 5R/T or A5000 just to try them out. I seriously tossed my canon dslr and lenses for a Nex-5R and am well satisfied that I could get a pocketable camera that I could take anywhere and still get dslr quality pics, hell it was an huge upgrade. If you do try them out and like them, seriously think about investing a tinny bit more money in the A6000, its a monster for the price.

I guess the canon equiv would be the EOS M, but its slow and shitty too....

EDIT: Damnit, sony started their lens promo today. I checked the price of a 5T kit before I started this post, and when I checked again the promo started and everything went up $100....

I really do want to get into better camera's, but bringing something with detachable glass, is something I really want to avoid for this outing.

A promo that raises prices...

Yeah, there is some kind of sale on Canon and Sony camera bundles, it takes a bunch off the combo lens. Unfortunately that savings comes out of the regular price, making it a wash, and crap for anyone who doesn't want the lens they are trying to offload.

Anyways, have you considered borrowlenses.com? $100 should net you a good camera for about 18 days. It's a much smaller bite out of your wallet if do want to go for a better camera down the road. Edit: Uh, the selection sucks... hmm...

It's one thing I miss about my previous job, could get some smoking deals through the purchase plans that the manufacturers had. :(

Ok, I got a deal on the filter adapter for the G16, so I'm wondering what kind of filter I should get? Should I get a filter set?

What should I get to make sure I get the most out of this camera?

UV? Digital? Polarizer? Two fast 64GB SD Cards or one medium speed 128GB card?

I'm starting freak out a bit, and I'm cheesed, I found a RX-100 Mk2 for $700, but I can't cancel the G16, so it's getting the love.

Edit: Uses a 58mm filter size.

The Canon G line is pretty good. I still have my G3 and external flash.

My Sony A6000 will arrive next week. APS-C with 192 point PDAF AF sensors, it also uses contrast for hybrid focus. I would get that any day over the RX-100 Mk2.

My big deal in life is needing a viewfinder. Since I wear progressive lens glasses i have to tilt my head back to look at a screen plus in bright sunlight screens get washed out. If you are taking proper outdoor photos the sun should be behind you, or basically shining on your screen.

At least the G16 has a viewfinder so I consider it a good camera. But I'll take my much larger APS-C sensor. Compare 1/1.7 to APS-C
