Radeon 8500 Gamma is fixed - 9:40 pm EST - MrB
Cliff Watson a dedicated member at AVS Forums has got a chance to test out ATI's newest drivers that are yet to be released to see if the dreaded gamma bug that has plagued the drivers ever since release. Here's what he had to say: Good news at last! Stephen from ATI ask me to verify that the broken gamma has been fixed in a soon to be released version of the drivers and I can confirm it has been fixed. I increased the gamma correction setting to maximum level and the lower third of the grayscale ramp was almost vertical without any broken segments. These new driver sets have more than just a fix for gamma but also a whole new slew of settings! ;) Doesn't that get your juices going.

When will we see this so called driver because it's still not doing a darn thing in the latest release. I'm getting tired of having to turn brght/contrast on the front of my monitor when I play CS or UT. Sorry for my rant but this is the only negative comment I have. Other than this, I've happy with my 8500AIW. Can anyone provide any answers ? Why don't they just take this setting out if it's never going to be addressed ?

Thanx,
A

yes i have been rantin about this "bug" as well...But alas! Submit a bugreport to ati...that may get the ball rolling. Unless ati is really blowin smoke up our 4$$es, which i doubt. tell them its with older games cuz i have a feeling that they will send you to that stupid "why is quake3 so dark?" support page. The ideal im gettin is that older games arnt smart when it comes to controlling the gamma right..but newer games (i.e JK2, MOHAA) do controll it very well.

heh, i never even think to test the game gamma in the drivers... I just use the gamma/brightness/contrast hotkeys in rage3d tweak when needed. :)

You are dealing with a different gamma then Cliff. Cliff is talking about overlay gamma found in the Overlay tab. I've never really played with gama gamma myself. Just wanted you to know the difference. Sorry i'm no help!

Its quite all right. But still old games are too dark and cannot set the gamma bright enought with on the radeon (half-life, unreal). I know quake3 and on can properly increase the brightness but i think ATi should know about it. I mean no ones gonna give up Counter Strike any time soon, right?

In the past I tried several of the add-on tweakers and something strange always happpend, so I stay away from them. I use RefreshLock for my refresh rates (fantastic app!!), now all I need is a simple gamma tool. I was using GameUtil but it screws CS and adobe premiere up for me so it's a pain. It's easier to manually adj the controls on the monitor, but it looks weak :( The overlay gamma has always worked for me, at least when it came to adjusting video files and such. So I don't understand that. Thanx for all the feedback. I'll keep being patient :)
