Galaxy S8

Been looking at phones now and again to replace my S6 that has had GPS problems since about 6mo after I got it. I noticed the S8 is coming out soon, and watched several videos and read a bit about it.

There seems to be a lot of great features, but I noticed that it also a heart rate monitor. I'm not sure how it works yet, but does anyone know if this is something I can capture and overlay on a video?

Any experience or thoughts on the heart rate monitor question? ;)

If you want something to monitor your heartrate. Get something that monitors your heart rate. Dont get a cell to do it.

Not being a dick, but compromising yourself on a phone for something like that is illogical.

If it's anything like the S7s or Note 5s, it works, it's accurate, I've used it sparingly. But I wouldnt use it as a primary function, it's awkward.

You're jumping to conclusions based on a simple question. I'm not buying a phone for a heart rate monitor. I saw it in the list of features and was curious how well it worked.

Hmm, I'll have to look into it a bit more. Curious if it updates fast enough and how it gets the heart rate.

Again I dont know if its the same way the as the previous ones, but its just awkward, takes a few seconds, and it uses the bright ass LED, everyone knows what you are doing. Its very awkward to use.

It's not easy to Google info on how the HR monitor works. I found something regarding S5. If it still works like that, it's not something you can overlay on any video anyone would want to watch. Garmin and likely also other companies in the HR business have solutions in which you can get more interesting videos with HR overlay.

I am still running on my speedy S5. Honestly, despite how good S8 is, the fact that battery technology has tanked for the last couple of years is bothering me. I hate that charging your cell daily is now standard and noone is attempting to fix that.

Thanks for the info on the heart-rate monitor guys. It's a feature that caught my attention, and something I've been wanting to play with and possibly add to Motorsport videos I've been making. Seems like researching other, more dedicated devices would be a better solution.

Back to the S8 though...this is the only phone that has really caught my attention on the models available right now. But...I'm open to alternatives. A bunch of my friends have the Google Pixel and it seems OK, but doesn't really make me want to go after it.

After using the Note 3 for a couple of years and dealing with their uninstallable bloatware, crappy battery life, and degrading performance, I finally had enough of Samsung and switched back to iPhone. Until Samsung allows pure Android to be installed, they'll never get another dollar from me.

Check Garmin's offerings. There are several variants of the Virb. I've no experience on the cameras, but Garmin's HR and gps training devices are among the best there are.

Can't you install a completely different custom ROM like Cyanogen to fix that problem? Did that with my old S3 when it got bloated to buggery and was too slow.

Not sure if you can do that while tied to Verizon, can you?

You can, but with Verizon improving their boot loader lockdown every year it's getting harder to do so.

That said - I'm in the "No way in hell" camp regarding samsung. I won't even capitalize the name, those lousy dogs.

3 phones, all notes, and *All* went belly up less than a month after warranty was up.

Coincidence? Sure, maybe, but damned if I'll buy a fourth to see if it happens again.

Damn really... my Note 2 while having bad batt life and a bit flaky now on old android 4,2,2 is still kicking...

I have no idea what will eventually replace it.

After my Note 5, and the Fiance's S7. I'll never buy a Samsung again. Software has just gone to complete ****.

Agreed.

I lost my Note 5 in Bahrain 2 weeks ago, and my wife's S7 is a POS.

I got home, purchased a Google Pixel 128GB and I couldn't be happier. No more bloat.

I am in  with my little Pixy.

Totally opposite experience here compared to some.

Samsung is the way to go in our house, never had an issue with any of our Samsung phones/tablets -- which between the wife and I number to 12 total devices over the last 4 years.

I honestly can't think of a single issue that we have had.
Albeit, I would admittedly prefer that Samsung still had the IR blaster in their latest devices and adopted a dual camera approach (really appreciated that feature of my previous LG G5), but we'll see what the Note 8 brings to the table.
