Ford made a massive announcement today about accelerating electric vehicle production with a giant new factory to produce electric pickup trucks in Tennessee and three new battery gigafactories.

The massive new project is called ‘Blue Oval City’.

There’s a lot to unpack here, but here are the main new announcements:

Blue Oval City is going to be a complex constructed on a nearly 6-square-mile site in west Tennessee to build next-generation electric F-Series pickups and advanced batteries.
The battery plant is going to be in partnership with SK Innovation, a large Korea-based battery cell manufacturer.
On top of the battery plant at Blue Oval City, Ford and SK will build a new “BlueOvalSK Battery Park” in central Kentucky. It will consist of “twin battery plants that will power a new lineup of Ford and Lincoln EVs.”
Blue Oval City is going to be built in Stanton, Tennessee and the twin battery factories are going to be built in Glendale, Kentucky.

Sounds like a massive investment....but the folks in Michigan are probably wondering why this is all going out of state.

Understood, but you have the supply chains already in place, experienced work force, infrastructure, etc.

somehow Germany manages to do well with their unions (and yes I know they build in China and Mexico too).

but I digress.

Maybe unions in Germany arent trying to nickel and dime their employers (and employers not trying to penny pinch to the extreme)?

Cuz thats what the unions and employers in north america do...

They need to go huge from an infrastructure perspective then as well.

1000 Mile Trip
Audi Q5 - 18hr 39min

Tesla Model S: +1hr 32min (this could have been reduced by charging overnight at hotel)

Ford Mustang Mach E: +6hr 35min

I watched that MKBHD video! This provided a good takeaway I got from watching the original though I imagine *some* people won't even make it past the the first 3 min for *reasons*.

I drive a BEV MG5 Estate and it's the best car I've ever owned. It's the only BEV Estate available in the UK market and it's simply awesome. About 200 mile range, massive boot, in which I can get my golf clubs and trolley, without moving the seats. Lovely quiet drive, fully automatic absolutely love it to bits.

I read that in James May's voice...

We need more interesting EV choices here.

Too many SUVs and CUVs.....

and the VW ID.BUZZ which is the only EV im interested in at the moment.....now looks more like a generic stylish van......(VW Transporter van...but more stylish) rather than a throwback hippie van.....completely losing its appeal to me.....

Plus the charging network here sucks ass still.....
