Farewell Lumia 950XL

Planet Express
So, I finally took the bullet and replaced my Lumia 950XL.

It was a tough decission as I wanted to keep supporting Windows 10 Mobile, however, MS had little interest on it and finding apps and hardware replacements was becoming more difficult with time. After struggling with my battery life for some months and having purchased a crappy chinese battery clone (that froze my phone every 10 minutes) I decided it was time to move on.

I got myself a Sony XPERIA XA1 Ultra in order to gain some time until I get the XZ Premium (I hope in february). It's a mid-range phone with some high-end stuff, so far I'm pleased by its performance and looks, I miss some stuff like 4K video and 1440p screen but may got those back next year.

Let's see how things go on the MS boat, I may return to Windows if things change...

I am pretty pissed about my Lumia 950.. the Battery sucks. It was never that good to begin with and it runs down quickly.

And the 1 App I really use alot is Audible and wouldn't you know it that app stopped working on the 15th. Everything else seems to work well enough..The head phone jack also just **** the bed.. only 1 earbud works fully.. Its only been a year and half but I am thinking about getting a new Phone. I just don't know what to get.

I was also very gently with the phone and its breaking down pretty quick.

Who is more evil Google or Apple? I always said I would never buy an apple product for some reason.. but since MS botched there phones my choices are limited.

I had ton of issues with apps in Windows 10 Mobile, some were subpar compared to what you could find in Android or iOS and some were non existant...

I lived with that for almost two years, but lately things started to get worse, apps that were working fine suddenly stopped working, bugs, and slowness..

I'm very happy with my xperia, it's a mid ranger but it's enough to buy me sometime before I get a true flagship phone.

I don't like Apple at all, so my only option was Android, I don't like the Galaxy either and Sony always seemed one of the best phones makers.

Anyone left now? It is sad that MS missed the boat so badly. I really miss my Windows Phone. One of the biggest surprises to me when I moved to Apple is how weak their software is. Anything to do with the HW is awesome and the Apps are good. But, the non-HW features of the OS seem limiting and the obvious slant towards Apple's my way or the highway approach to their system is ridiculous. It seems they only embraced the worst attributes of leveraging their market dominance. Regardless, the sum of the package is still so much better than what we are left is with Windows Phone. But, I really liked where MS was heading with that OS and wish Apple would adopt the more open approach. Of course, this will never happen :(

I still have a Lumia 930....

but that's only because new unlocked non-contract phones are stupidly expensive.

Ive been ready to jump ship for awhile since the app situation just got worse and worse. Its a good thing I barely relied on them as I just ended up going to the mobile websites (which don't work properly half the time on the phone...) What apps we have, usually sucks or is super basic and buggy as hell. What apps we don't have...well we don't have and doesn't seem like we'll ever get, especialy localized apps....ill never see those on windows. And what apps we already do have is slowly getting phased out one by one.

And just recently I came across the Samsung DeX system on a facebook page which is pretty much Samsung's version of Continuum and everyone posting on THAT page was all like "omg what a great feature, super awesome, go Samsung/android! so innovative!" not knowing MS came out with a functional version of it first (which you don't actually hear jacksquat about it now that I think about it.....)

so yeah tells you how much anyone knows or cares about windows 10 mobile at this point.

Plus my phone (whether its hardware fault or software fault) is becoming more unstable. More random crashes and reboots lately, my battery indicator doesn't seem that accurate at around 30%, hardware gets too hot too quickly and not just from games now, taking photos is unreliable because sometimes it just reboots after processing the picture or even focusing....

Yeah its time to move on. I'm choosing Apple only because I want something that works....which they tend to be good at.....and I don't really need to fiddle around with the phone anymore.

That's how I got to Apple, don't regret it one bit.

I guess. If you are willing to not use any software Apple provides, the phone is pretty great. Apps are always the latest and greatest. The hardware is top notch. But when you start trying to get Siri and Apple maps to work for you, you will really miss your Windows Phone :(

One of my primary uses of my phone was hands-free functionality using Bluetooth while driving in my car and it worked beautifully on my Windows phone. Siri and Apple Maps make that impossible. I was disappointed that I couldn't just speed-dial Siri like you can Cortana. So, I figured I could work around the lack of that feature by remembering to put my phone somewhere that I could push and hold the home button to bring up Siri. (Strike 1) Not that big a deal, I can adapt. So, I started remembering to take my phone out of my pocket before I started driving. Now I ask Siri to get me directions. Half of the time she doesn't understand what I say (Strike 2). If she does understand, Apple Maps often decides that I want to go 2500 miles to a city in New Jersey when I really was asking about a neighborhood park (Strike 3). OK, maybe I just need try to tell Siri the actual address. That almost NEVER works (Strike 4). Wait, Siri isn't going to tell me when a text message arrives? Huh? I love that feature on my Windows phone. Why is it missing? (Strike 5). The only working system I now have is to completely give up on hands free operation, mount my phone where I can touch it, and use Google maps.

Recently my wife bought a new car and it has Apple Car Play. Hurray! Maybe now some of my concerns are addressed. Yay! I now can see my text messages. Wait, Siri is still trying to send me to New Jersey :( Apple Maps just told me to park my car and walk to my destination when I am sitting on a freeway off ramp with a 8 foot fence between me and my destination (true story). Maybe I can get to Google Maps through the Car Play interface? Nope! Blocked by Apple. Grrrrrr

Don't even get me started on the iTunes for Windows App.....

I don't like personal assistants on phones, I hate the idea of talking to my phone. I even disable Cortana on my laptop. Apple Maps has worked fine when I use it, but I mostly use Google Maps. Google Maps does some really stupid things too, like telling you to turn 10ft after the highway offramp, trying to make you cut across 2-3 lanes of traffic. It's crazy.

I have iTunes installed, but I don't ever use it. Only time is to make a backup of my phone before installing a new beta OS.

Yeah I also dislike the whole personal assistants deal. Just give me standard voice commands and call it a day. In that sense, I don't think it matters which phone you have.

I suppose you don't have to use apple maps....just use whatever map program is best. HERE maps always gave me the longest directions for some reason, and since its been disabled and closed down for windows 10 the windows maps seems fine to me.

I don't really need a personal assistant either. But, hands free operation in my car was very useful using Windows phone. But, failed pretty miserably on iPhone. Not that there aren't things that are awesome about the phone. But, the software Apple gives in this domain isn't so good. MS did a much better job.
