DVD Playback with VIA 4.25a and ATI 063 drivers

When I installed the 63 drivers the DVD playback got jumpy. The video looks like the disc is scratched it glitches about once per second. I never experanced this with the 44 54 or the 56 drivers. The DVD playback has been good with 54 and 56 drivers. Although some issues did exist with DVD and the 44 drivers I was sure they were all fixed with the 63 drivers.
It does it at all resolutions and with TV out on or off. Does anyone else have this problem?
It might be my DVD player but I don't think so.
I reinstalled the 425a and 63 drivers just incase with now luck.

Hey TJ,

I have been getting the same sort of problems as you seem to be getting with DVD playback so far on my system. Just gets real choppy and it makes you think there's just a ton of scratches on the disk.

The drivers I am using right now are the 3063 mini (english-only) drivers from www.reactorcritical.com and the VIA 4in1 drivers.

Today I am downloading both the 3055 full drivers from ATI and the 3063 full drivers from ATI for testing purposes. When I get home I will test it out tonight when I get home with both of these to see if either way helps the DVD playback any. I'll probably throw up a post sometime tomorrow saying the results.

Overall so far... I am VERY impressed with my Radeon. I haven't even had the chance to go through and optimize the settings and i'm getting @53fps in Q3 with all the settings maxed out at my new default resolution of 1280x1024 :) WOOOOOOooo.

Ok well expect a post sometime tomorrow about the DVD, till then, peace.

OK, about the DVD playback thing. I tried it with both the 3055 and 3063 drivers from ATI's site to no avail. I also tried UNinstalling VIA's 4in1 drivers just for kicks and that didn't do it either.

I distinctly remember in the setup process however, that it said something about possible degration of my DVD playback capability because it couldn't detect DMA being enabled on my DVD drive & HD.

I tried snooping around in my system's bios and I couldn't find anything about it. Not sure if this is directly affecting it but it sure might.

3D performance, as far as I have seen, is flawless though. It's just the DVD that is still shaky at times... I'll continue looking into it though, I want to see this 'industry best DVD playback' that my card can do.

These have got to be driver issues.

When I first installed my card, the DVD playback was perfect in Win98SE, (3068 drivers)& W2K.

I recently updated the W2K drivers to 3043, & now the DVD is all messed up in W2K, although it still works great in SE.

I can say that the DVD Playback WAS the best I had ever seen until I went with the 3063 drivers. I didn't see a change when going from the Via 2.23 to the 2.24 or the 2.25a 4in1 dirvers.
Please keep me informed Ill keep checking also.

Hey TJ,

Did you see if DMA was enabled on your DVD-ROM drive? I also have a ABIT KT7-RAID and I had problems enabling DMA on my DVD drive which led to gittery DVD playback. I found out that it was due to my Soundblaster Live emulation of SB16. All I did was go into the properties for the SB16 Emulation and there was an option to "Allow LPT Interupt Sharing" which by enabling allowed me to turn on DMA on my DVD. Playback was silky after that.

You are right the DVD does need to be set a DMA and the sound blaster needs to be set to share the LPT interupt. These things have been done. but alas to no aval. Those settings helped when I was using the older drivers but not the new ones.
NEED MORE INFO
Thanks TJ

I found the problem with the DVD Playback.
When installing the 3063 drivers I also installed a 56X CD-ROM. I put the CDrom on as the master second IDE controller and set the DMA to enabled.
I thought the DVD drive that was set on DMA still was set. After looking today at the settings I found the DMA not set on the DVD player.
I tried to enable DMA but I keep getting an error that the hardware does not support this setting. I switched the DVD to the Master and set the CDrom to slave.
Now the DMA is reset on the DVD and the DVD Playback is again the best in the industry. (INHO) The only querky thing is I can't set the DMA to the CDrom. I get the error this hardware does not support this setting. This only affects the slave drive on the second IDE controller. This could be a KT7 Raid MB problem and if I flashed the bios this may go away.

Way_ne_99 was on the right track.
In my case I took for granted that once I set the DMA it stayed where I set it. I was wrong and a lesson is learned by all RECHECK YOUR SETTING IF THINGS DON'T WORK LIKE THEY DID.
So for all of you with funky play back look at the settings.
I am running the 3063 drivers with 4in1 4.25a
and now everything seems to be perfect except for the DMA thing with the cdrom and the 3dmark 2000 benchmarks are lower than they were with 3056 drivers. I really don't care that much about the test scores because all of the games play great and the FPS are high and the textures and color are set to 32bit and FSAA is enabled.
Good luck.

Are You shure that it says "hardware does not support"? I think it says "hardware MAY not support". If it´s so just enable DMA for the CD-rom. If it dont work You can always disable it again in failsafe mode.

DMA will not stay checked on the drive that is in the slave slot on the seconday IDE controller. It doesn't need to be removed because it won't be checked when I reboot.

What the error is exactly is: Changing this setting may have undesireable affects with your hardware. Contact your hardware vendor to ensure thsi setting is supported. Hit OK to continue.
It will give this error no matter which drive is in the slave slot.
I did have an old 2x spinner in there just to use up the slot when I was building this thing and when ever I plugged it in the damn thing would not boot so there is some kind of a SNAFU in there some where. I belive it is a hardware issue with the board but I am not going to fight it right now. I have another KT7 nonraid to build here this weekend and I need a break so I can start fresh. That is a battle I will fight later.
