DSL ordering HELL! AAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Well, we finally did it. We ordered DSL...or so I thought. I attempted to order earthlink DSL (my current isp) through their online ordering page. I got an email from them confirming our order and letting us know we would be getting e-mailed order status reports. A week went by and no word from them. I e-mailed their customer service and they basically said they had no idea what the hell I was talking about and I should call them. I call earthlink and replace the order. I'll have dsl before I know it I think. I check my email and I got another confirmation e-mail. I open the email only to find that they have our phone number wrong!!! So I call EL back and correct the problem. On EL's web site they have a page where you can check your DSL order status. Guess what. They have the right phone number but now they have the wrong ****ing state!!!!! I live in missouri and they have michigan! When will this nightmare end!!!!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

some customer service peoples just need a good ol'Biatch slapp'n...

DSL? Many people have had hell trying to get it. If you haven't already, check out www.dslreports.com - that site saved me and helped increase my dl speed by several hundred k per second.

I have earthlink/mindspring and get 1.3 MB/s dl and 400k up (I live 5,000 feet from the box).

I have earthlink DSl too. It is ADSL.
I get 180kbps down, that's 1.5 Mbits.
But only about 15-16kbps upstream. 128 Kbits. What I don't
like is the PPPOE protocol that they are using. Too messy. So i
got myself a Linksys router (I needed it anyway, cause I had to
connect two PC's to the net). Now it is very convenient. I also had
some problems with setup. Everything was working. Modem
connected to the other side, but i could not log in. It took them
about 10 days to fix.

Vitocorleone. How did you get 400k up?

My dsl is of the SWBell variety. Good, but could use a ****load of improvement. The D/L is 1.544mbit, 384kbit upload. Of course they screwed up the upload so it's only like 100kbit. It's been a roller coaster with tech support as well as the uptime. All in all they only get a 5/10.

I also have SWBell DSL and my download speeds rarely exceed 40 actual "kilobytes per second" and my upload speeds are usually under 13 "kilobytes per second." What part of Dallas do you live in, Snuffoleupagus? I've heard that SWBell is putting up a lot more dslams and a speed increase is supposed to be noticable around June or so.

That's great that you guys have had success w/ your DSL stuff but in my area (D.C. Metro) I have had nothing but problems... Verizon is the main carrier in my area so they handle laying out all of the lines. I placed an order through Verizon which they convienently CANCELLED for me without my knowing (what a surprise they're being oversold like crazy around here). I also tried signing up through Flashcom, but since they have to go through Verizon to get the line, that order got cancelled too. Fan-freakin-tastic!

I eventually broke down and got roadrunner cable modem and it's been tearing it up. I get 140k/sec downloads and at least 70k/sec uploads from what I've seen so far. Download a cheap routing program to turn one of my computers into a router so I can share the connection over my other 3 computers. Everything's been going great w/ that so far and get this: less than a week after I placed the order for my cable modem the techs were at my house installing it. Not too bad, not too bad at all.

I have a 1.5/384 DSL line through Covad and Concentric (now XO apparently) and have almost no complaints. I get almost the full upload speed (I run a web server so I see the peaks quite often) and the downloads are very decent. I'm quite familiar with how the Internet works and don't expect 150+kBps from every download site.... but downloading multiple files will yield around 80-90% of the max line speed. The only complaint I have is that they seem to route all their traffic through Chicago (I'm in Seattle), so when the link from Seattle-Chicago went funky and was getting 700ms+ pings, everything was horribly slow. But, after it was fixed, things were great again.

Then again, I live about 4000 ft. from my central office, so physical line problems don't pop up.

Having worked at a local ISP for quite some time and set up DSL for them... my recommendation is to NOT go with any local ISP whatsoever. The startup cost is very high and they will oversubscribe like mad in order to make a little profit and stay afloat. This means horrible ping times, horrible speeds, and horrible support (those teenager support guys don't know the difference between a bridge and a router). Go with the big guys... like Concentric/XO.

What's sad for me is I live less then 1000Ft. from my C/O and can't get DSL cause of efin verizon...
Damn you James Earl Jones......

BTW..Have a nifty trick for Dial-up modems. In Device Manager/Modems In the Advanced commands field enter &F1 and this tells the modem to use factory defaults and not listen to what windows tell it. It really works...
Windows Sometimes doesn't set your modem up the most effetive way...
Damn you Bill Gates...

Hey Kai,
The program I got was WinRoute Lite. You can get a 30 demo from Download.com just search for that (still waiting for http://astalavista.box.sk to get a crack for the demo). You just have to run that on the pc that has the connection and then set up the other pc's on your network to use that pc as it's gateway (TCP/IP properties->Gateway) and throw some dns servers onto the dns config. tab and you're set. Hope that helps.

Oh yeah and as for the &F1 trick with modems? I work at RCN/Erol's as a tech and I've been giving that one out to customers for a few months now, works pretty nice too.

Funny story, I originally got DSL from a local vendor near my house who got their service from Pacific Bell, I had major problems getting information from them about getting 2 IP's would I have to buy a router or run WINNT on one of my boxes to do routing and whatnot. Well they kept telling me one thing then another. After about 2 weeks for going back and fourth with salespeople about my service I talked to the President of the company who asked me what I wanted them to do (since I was their first customer they didn't want to lose me). I told the pres. I wanted free installation, a free DSL modem and a free router, which they gladly gave me. 6 months later the company goes under and does not ask me for the equiptment back, And I continue to get free service for another 3 months. I am now using a local DSL company called DSL Extreme in the LA area. All in all I got about 5 months DSL service free, and about $1,000.00 worth of very very good DSL equiptment. As a side not I have yet to pay for my service with DSL Extreme due to billing problems in their system and have been told I won't be charged. Not bad huh? I would never go with one of the majors for DSL since I have had such good and cheap service with others. :)

k thanx :)

Here in Fr, my dsl is only 512Kbit (max DSL is 1Mbits/s).

So i got 60/80Kb/s in dl and 16Kb in up..

what would i give for this speed :D
here in Austria things are quite bad. i have a cable connection which is very rare and not available to many people! my d/l speed is 300kbit (37KB/s max), and u/l is 256kbit. i have to pay 'bout 38 US$/month for it. at least there's no download limit!
the fastest available connection would be DSL with 512kbit d/l and 64kbit u/l for ~53 US$ (incl. basic charge for telephone) there you have 1GB/month download limit - this suckz!!
but we have to live with it :)
but things look different in the mobilephone sector. there are ~8 million people in Austria and 75% have a mobile phone (or more), only Finland has a higher rate, i think

The One :

For my connection, i pay more than 50 USD each month to my operator including all (even the modem) and DSL 1Mb/s is about 100 USD!!!
A good thing : no limit ;)
A bad thing : bigger hard drives and burn, and burn, and burn :p

Ps: until november i was on 56K but now the Internet is becoming very famous here so transfert rates on 56K are becoming sh** ;)
