Drivers won't continue without "Standard VGA Driver"

I have an elderly PC used for hardware tests and miscellaneous duties, dual-booted between Windows2000 and WindowsXP. I recently needed changes to it, and replacing a (Green competitor) PCIe GPU with a Radeon hasn't worked for the W2K operating system.

AMD's (ATI's) drivers complain about not finding any current INF, and abort. I've tried several dating to the appropriate period for the X1300 video card, each does the same. Those without the CCC software do so almost immediately. Microsoft hasn't been useful.

Anyone here know what the heck is going on?

(Just gimme a hint!)

First what drivers? Are you sure you are using the right legacy drivers? The new drivers will not support your GPU. You need to go here to download old drivers.

I would suggest going into Device Manager and under View, select Show Hidden Devices.

Delete anything and everything related to Graphics Card drivers by checking the box to Delete such.

Reboot, let your version of Windows detect the installed card and it will then install the Native VGA drivers.

Then, as mentioned above, be sure to go to the Legacy Drivers section of the AMD drivers downloads and grab the download for that specific card and OS.

I have copies of the proper time period's W2KXP drivers, with and without the Catalyst Control Center (2004 through 2008). Windows XP is running a set of newer drivers, offered by AMD as "Legacy", and the XP OS hasn't been at all uncooperative.

W2K's immediately involved functions will often freeze when allowed to try to run. The New Hardware Wizard, every time. Device Manager freezes when told to do anything other than to "disable" the "Video Controller". I visited several Microsoft forum FAQs and discussions of the problem, and their advice is not working.
