Did IBM support the Nazis in WW2?

There's a news article at Altavista telling about an upcoming book and possible lawsuits against IBM for contributing to Hitler's power during WW2. I won't go into the details, go read about it if you haven't yet. Anyway, I wasn't sure myself, until later this evening. I was doing some research, and look at this old IBM logo I found!

IBM-WW2.jpg

I guess they made it "just in case", but fortunately we won so they scrapped it for the blue logo we are all familiar with. Maybe we should all switch to Macintosh.

There is a commentary on that subject here:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/16810.html

Which indicates there might be reasons to call the
source material of this book into question.

How do you prove that "old IBM logo" you found
isn't a fake itself? Where did you find it?
What claims did the poster who put it up make
about it?

One thing that gets me is the logo, IIRC IBM did not
use the "striped" I B M lettering until the 1970s.
And it was always either in blue lettering or on
a blue background (one of the reasons they got the
nickname "Big Blue")

If you wanna a real story, go see if BMW was involed in the WW2. In short: Durin the war, they were using slaves to build there equipment. When this came out into the public ( not to sure when it did ), they quickley said that they will compinsate all of the slaves to ensure the public that they actually care. BUT, the last few remaining slaves have not seen or heard of anything from BMW. This was a while ago when i heard/read about this, so things could of changed since then, HOPEFULLY...

Im not trying to bash BMW or anything. I like there cars, HEY... im going to buy one this summer. It kinda bugs me when they ( or anyone of that matter ) say that there going to do something, and not fallow through with it...:(

You see when we're talking about international companies you can't judge them on human stantards and moral. A company (and the people that earn from it) have only one belief. PROFIT. So if it meant more money to work with the Nazis ... Be sure that every other company would do the same thing (in the same position). And don't think that companies supporting the other side did it for different reasons, they just thought that it would be better for them if the nazis loose. And so, as long as these companies are left free to make profit by exploiting the workers with every mean, Shell will support dictaroships in Africa, IBM will support the nazis, industries will pollute the rivers, car companies will make faulty cars and so on. You can't expect a company to be "right" because that would mean less money and that company would be overtaken the next day. In other words they're just doing their job (and they're doing pretty well). The question is , what do you do about it....

Lets all go out and live lil hutz by the beaches.....Everyone would be so much happier, pleasant and more relaxed instead of being slaved on this work, money drivn world...........

They helped Hitler and his army by providing them with refreshing beverages.

Edit: hehe left out my smiley for the quote :)

I haven't read all the stuffs around about this, but I did hear some about it on NPR... It sounds an aweful lot of hullabaloo over not much. Who's machines do you think America and the Allies were using during the war?

Some funny lookin guy with a black mustache bought a bunch of IBM machines to catalogue the prisoners in the concentration camps... it isn't like IBM said "hrmm... I bet that funny lookin guy is killing a bunch of Jews over there, lets send them some computers so they can keep track of them better!"

So in your mind, it's either this or that.Huh. Ok , I don't care but next time your company doesn't give you a raise, tell them "it's ok, cause I don't want to live in a beach".

Lets get this straight, i would never refuse a raise, WHY, cause we need to make money to survive in this WONDERFUL world of ours.

All im just saying is, life would be alot simpler, less stressful, and more relaxing if eveyone wasnt at each others throught to make that extra dollar.

Hmmm...I see some Jewish people driving a Volkswagen "People's Car" around.

Back in 1937 when Volkswagen was founded (I think), Hitler used them and dreamed of mass production of the "Beetle" which he called the "KDF"

I think you guys are going over the top trying to
find blame on companies in 2001 for things that
the company heads did better than 50 years ago.

A lot of those deals were also made during the
great depression, when those companies were lucky
to still afford to keep thier doors open.
A lot of businesses were involved with Germany for
the same reason as the rest of Europe, they were
trying to help rebuild their economy. Many of the
values and prejudices of the time seemed perfectly
normal. Kinda the same way some Nvidia owners are
about Radeon owners today.

And Hitler may have had an idea for a "People's Car"
that Ferdinand Porshe and others turned into a
working vehicle, but he had little to do with
the actual invention of the Volkswagen. Also, that
was long before people realized what a nutter he was.
