Deathloop - If At First You Don’t Succeed... Die, Die Again

Played a bit more. It keeps sending me to the same area because I am on an Island. I think all of you know how much I hate back tracking so you can imagine how much I am enjoying this hot garbage. I will play a bit more but if this continues I really should’ve had that double cheeseburger meal.

get a happy meal instead

I also tried boning it a bit last night. Was a terrible time. At the end of it I just ended shooting up the whole place to complete tutorial 2 and got the residium ability. Going to continue for a bit but most likely I will be just killing nubs all around. Can’t stand these sneaky sneaky read too much text and do stupid inventory management type games. Also gunplay is between terrible and terribad. Hoping some mods will actually make the guns useful later.

I find this game gets super repetitive after about 5 hours. You go back to the same place heaps of times and the levels don't change that much across the timezones. Some tasks tell you to go kill the same visionary again for a slab upgrade.... I have a four powers and have been through areas a few times I'm disappointed in how basic and bland these levels are. I'm also finding myself either just blinking my way to my objective because I just want to progress and not kill the same fools over and over. It's odd that clues are not highlighted in this game when there is so much trash everywhere.

There are some neat aspects and I can see what it is trying to do, but I am not enjoying it much at all.

My biggest gripe is the gunplay. You can’t shoot anything straight and nail gun is a great idea but takes more than 1 shot to the head. Wtf is that? So much for stealth. Plus when you point it in the crosshair middle and shoot it hits the side and causes an alarm. No precision in shooting. That ticks me off to no end. Will probably get an uninstall before I even bother proceeding.

Also if in 5 hours it is going further downhill then might as well just get out now. Game needs to have some redeeming quality rather than being completely arbitrary. Also the constant VO of colt is pissing me off. I don’t have that much attention span. Can’t believe this was I don’t know IGN or GSpot game of the year. Wtf?

Nail gun kills in one shot to the head if you hold to charge it. At least it did for me (blue or purple version). But yeah other guns are a bit erratic and accuracy is meh. If they weren't it would be super easy on top of it being fairly easy as it is now. The only hard combat area in the game is the last bit where it will spawn like 50 guys if you get detected. You'll probably hate that bit like me. 80% of my kills were using the shotgun since it does a good job. I hate how little ammo they give you and most guns just feel too loosey goosey. My favorite thing about combat was hacking turrets and setting them for baddies.

I finished it in 13.5 hours. Stayed repetitive all the way to the end, although there are a few secret areas you visit in the last few hours. But to unlock them you might have to redo the same bit a few times so in some sense it gets even more repetitive. I screwed up and had to go around the loop a few extra times to get it right. I also fell to my death on the last level after killing all targets but just hit alt+f4 to save myself from doing the whole ****ing day again because it's tedious.

I think it's odd that the game doesn't give you direct instructions on how to kill all 7 in the one day when it seems to give you direct instructions for almost everything else. I guess it expects the player to work it out? Might be hard to complete if you get to the final stage and then take a break for a few weeks. Sure it's not super complex but the way things are arranged in the leads page could make some people confused.

The Colt+Julianna chats get more annoying later in the game imo and the story is pretty bad overall, no pay off there for me at all.

Overall I thought the game was mediocre. Too repetitive. Levels are not that big or interesting. Stealth is okay but it has some quirks. Shooting is mediocre. Julianna incursions are annoying (still happens in single player). I think it has a few cool ideas and might have been okay as a 7hr indie game. 5.5/10

Thanks for the review. I think I will try one more time and call it. I don’t have patience for repetition.

Deathloop is coming to Game Pass on the 20th. The one year Playstation console exclusivity just ended yesterday.

Just started this, not sure I like it. Quiet boring so far, only just left Updaam. This thread is not even two full pages long, says it all.

It is terrible. I installed it more than once and tried to play it more than once. Game is just bad. Like Dishonored games the shooting is loose and the levels etc. are repetitive af.
Just not worth my time. I gave up.

Gets far more repetitive in the back half, since you have to revisit areas. If you don't like the first 3-4 hours then giving up is a great option.

Okay what the fuck. I love Arkane games (Dishonored, Dishonored 2, Death of the Outsider, Prey, Prey Mooncrash) and every single time I sleep on their games. Every single time I think "oh, looks mildly interesting, I'll save it for later". And every time everyone else goes "technical issues, kinda boring, lots of exposition and inventory management". Then by the time I finally give it a proper go, it turns out one of the coolest games.

I loved Dishonored 1, but didn't play Dishonored 2 because apparently it was heavy on hardware. And, admittedly, on my 1060 it was no fun. After upgrading to a 1080 I went back to it, and it was a really cool game. So was Death of the Outsider. And Prey, I had completely ignored, but when I did give it a go I fell in love. Then I ignored Mooncrash for years because it was a roguelite/like/whatever, until I chose to try it anyway, and fell in love again.

So obviously I've never tried Deathloop, because the reviewers were so-so at the time, people weren't overly enthusiastic, basically your typical Arkane game lifecycle. But now with Gamepass I'm finally getting around to this game, and I'm playing the first ~20 minutes, and I'm loving it. Love the style, love the characters, love the Arkane combat mechanics (it's never a smooth first person shooter, the gunplay is always kinda awkward so other options become more interesting, kinda like Hitman), love the audacity of it all.

When will I learn that I simply love their games?

(Disclaimer: may end up hating it later. We'll see. Plus, I'm still staying far away from Redfall. Not touching that with a ten foot pole. :-p)

Well Deathloop is sitting at 88/100 on metacritic, so a fair few people loved it and if you like most of Arkane's games then I can see why you'd like this one. And if you like roguelikes that have you repeating the same area over and over, it's a match made in heaven.

For me it is probably my least favorite game from Arkane (excluding Wolfenstein Youngblood which they helped with).
