I was never able to really get into the first one. Too many "cinematic" interruptions that lasted way too f****** long. I want to play a game, not watch sequences. I don't mind a 5 minute sequence here and there, but this game when bonkers and over did it (a few times were around half an hour!).

You need to get past the first few hours.
The game certainly has long cut scenes, but its a small percentage of the playthrough and you really do play the game most of the time. The long cut scenes from what I remember were mostly at the beginning and the end of the game. Lots of fun gameplay to be had between that. Its nowhere near as bad as Kojima did it with MGS4 for example.
