cd writer question

I dont think its really a big deal..

My bro has a writer n his old 200mmx system and he dosnt have it checked on his. Hes running a richo4x420 i think.

I've seen some people stating that DMA should be DISABLED on your CD-Writer, but from my own experience it doesn't seem to make any difference whether it is or not.

I have it enabled on my Yamaha 4x4x16, and don't have any problems.

I have a Yamaha 8x8x24 (IDE). The manufacturer clearly states NOT to turn DMA on (but they don't say why). It works well that way and so I have no incentive to try to turn DMA on to see if it would break anything.

I have read in various places that DMA should be turned on with most brands and off for the few remaining ones, including Yamaha.

I guess following the manufacturer's recommendations for your particular model would be a good starting point!

I think enabling can cause a buffer underrun on some models, if I remember right. Mine is SCSI so it doesn't apply in my case, but if it did I would probably leave it turned off.

thnx for the advice...its already turned off...i was just wondering if it would be better to enable it...not, i am not having any prob with it not being enabled anyways...thnx again!

I have an ide hp 8x4x32x (a rebranded yamaha?) and, even tho hp says - i think - to disable dma, I found myself unable to record listenable audio cd's (data was okay) from the hdd with dma disabled - a few tracks in it would start sounding like it was skipping. Once I re-enabled dma, I've had no probs since.

Best bet is to enable it if you can, and only disable it if you have problems.

* Mileage on this advice will vary!
