Catalyst/Omega/6071 driver review

I benched these driver sets in Q3bench and did a full review of them. All the sets reviewed include:

Catalyst 02.1
Omega-Plutonium 1071b
ATI 6071
ATI 6071 + New OGL

All of these were done in Windows 2000 Professional. If you feel like reading it here's the link :)

Good job dude, but you really need more than Quake 3 for benchies. Interesting nonetheless. :D

When you see large differences in performance like that it's generally about a reduction in image quality via tweaks. So, I doubt it's an apples to apples comparison. Of course it could be that 3D-now! and SSE are being enabled for OGL, that could explain it.

thanks

thanks

yeah I plan on doing some benches with UT, Jedi Knight 2, and Serious Sam 2 at least.
Thinking of RTCW also but I want a newer game that uses the Unreal Engine to bench too... any ideas? I can't recall any new ones right now.

If you read ATI's FAQ on the Catalyst drivers, you'll find them saying that they haven't tweaked OpenGL as of yet. They have only tweaked direct3d. Noting that all your benchmarks have been OpenGL, you should probably try benching some direct3d games instead.

But it was a good read nonetheless. Thanks.

great!

great!

hey thanks for that info! now I know what games to bench :)
hmm, might do DX8.1 and some DX9 Beta benchs along with the
drivers

Well done man, I was still trying to figure out which driver to install on a clean install of XP and I think I made my decision now of the Omega-Plutonium. Although I am still debating on the catalyst.

I installed them

I installed them

No tweaking at all.

They seem ok, I got one run.dll error after the initial install, none after.

As well every time I go into the display properties and select the Advanced tab I get a few passes of a black par across my screen, any idea what this is?
