missed a couple 1900 dollar camera lens combos for this guy

planning on upgrading out of my (dont laugh) t1i which has served me well for a long long time.

after doing a couple of weddings for friends ive been approached by more friends that are willing to give me a significant chunk of money to photo their weddings so im thinking i need to step up to a full sized frame and some better glass.

i was also thinking of doing something like 'photo's of your kid at his/her sports games' but i was thinking that maybe a better body would suit this dual purpose better than a d6. any comments/suggestions?

this camera would mainly be used for:
weddings
sports events (prolly primarily soccer)
portraits/shoots

all on the side and trying to keep it fun

thanks in advance

You dont necessarily need to go full frame for your needs, most of today's current bodies will do those things very nicely. Sure some better than others, but i think it might be better to focus (fast glass, wide aperture) on glass and then body. Just make sure the body has the features you need. In this case low light performance along with the focusing system. Sorry don't know canon stuff all that well, so cant really guide you on actual bodies.

Good luck tho, seems like you can get going quite nicely.

I disagree. If he's getting paid to do gigs, especially low light events(like weddings), then he'll capitalize off of the benefits of FF.

Smaller sensor ISO performance is out of this world these days. That f/4 kit lens won't do him any good for weddings anyway.

He is upgrading from a T1i, which means he was doing just fine with a crop sensor. Razeus is right, sensors today are amazing. I had a T1i as well, and moved to a NEX-5R. I was blown away with how much sensors have improved. With the T1i I was scared to go above ISO 800, but with the NEX I just set to auto ISO because its soo much improved that I don't have to worry about nailing the exposure at high ISOs.

I choose the NEX as it suited my needs and price. Though if I were to buy a camera for some side gigs, I would choose one with suitable features and the #1 necessity: speed. Speed Speed Speed. Fast AF and fast glass.

Much of a wedding is shot in low light. It doesn't get much better then the 6D for low light shooting. He'll take advantage of the not only the AF system(center point anyways) of that camera but the low light iso capabilities of a FF sensor. If he plans on charging, having a better rig may be the difference in getting the shot or not. It not only benefits him(clean iso, in focus shot, etc) but his client who paid good money also. If he's budgeted for a 6D, he can't go wrong going that route for paid events. The setup will be paid off quickly anyways.

As far as sports, it's not the best but should be fine for youth sports as long as the user sticks to the center af point. If you're someone who likes to compose with points, you may be a bit disappointed as there's on the one center 'cross' point on the 6d and anything other(the other 10 points) then that center is weak.

Personally I think the best body to cover youth/high school/college/pro sports and events/weddings is the 5DIII and if I decided to get paid, this would be the route I would go. It's on ebay right now from an authorized dealer for $2600/body.

thanks for the responses!

i have been collecting glass for about 6 months now so im pretty much picked canon as my primary. low light is the priority followed by portraits and then sports lastly.

deffinately getting the kit, just for an all purpose lens to have on the body. ive got 2 primes and a fisheye as well as a something 300.

i would look towards the mark lines (i would need to rebudget) but from my understanding canon is going to be releasing a new version of that soon

i just hope i can get my hands on a 6d before spring break, i would like to offer up some family photos to the people that we will be vacationing with; if not the t1i will do just fine, it has been for quite some time now

When i mentioned wide aperture I dont always mean these pro 2.8 lenses. F4 is just one stop difference which i dont think we'll see that huge of an impact these days on digital bodies of today. If it was older bodies or on film then it makes more sense. Just make sure the lens is fast, has VR, accurate and produce sharp images colourful images. Also IMO Bokeh is almost indistinguishable between f/2.8 and f/4, so id say save on going with a 2.8 lens and put it towards other accessories (lights) or multiple f/4 lenses... granted if they product top notch results. Im about to ditch my Sigma 70-200 2.8 and grab Nikons 70-200 f/4. Tamron's new 70-200 2.8 is awesome but its like $400 (more so with sales this week) more than Nikon's f/4... for me i can miss the 2.8 for the amount i can save and put towards other stuff.

BUT everyone is different and has different needs. Hopefully the process isnt too nerve wrecking! :)

The Sony A7 and A7r are about to be released, and they are FULL FRAME (relative to 35mm film) mirrorless cameras with an OLED integrated viewfinder and focus-peaking for manual focus

well i didnt get it before spring break, and it now looks like canon is enforcing their MAP so im not sure ill be able to find a kit for sub 2K.

might just buy the body

Amazon has it for $1699/$2299. So not as low as it has been when on sale but certainly 'on-sale'.

I'm still so tempted to switch to Canon but I'm going to wait for the next gen to see if they counter Nikons DR.
