Can you help me upgrade my GPU?

Hi there,

I'm very sheepish when it comes to changing components in my desktop, but I am at the point where I think I have to upgrade my graphics card to continue playing games on it. I have a pretty old card, an AMD Radeon HD 6670, and I want to jump up a few tiers in terms of performance. <No Man's Sky>, <Fallout 4>, and <The Division> look like really interesting games, so I am thinking I might go ahead and try to jump to a GPU capable of running them (decently), but I have no idea what any of the values in a GPU comparison mean.

I'm sure you see these posts from time to time, and I apologize for how hard I'm vagueing here. It's just that I don't know what I'm talking about at all and I would really appreciate some help before I commit money to upgrading.

Price point: Anything lower than the cost of buying an XBox One or PS4 instead of upgrading my components.

Here are the specs for my computer:
Processor: AMD FX(tm)-4100 Quad-Core
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6670
RAM: 8GB
CPU Speed: 3.6Ghz

So, thanks in advance for any recommendations or help you can provide.

Seeing as he likes to run things long term he might consider a new Radeon for its dx12 perf.

400$ will get you a good 4 gig r380x or r390 non x.

Hi Folks,

First off, thanks so much for taking the time to help.

My monitor is pretty crappy - it's an Acer 022C running on the default Windows 7.1 display driver.

My PSU is a 600 watt - I cannot remember the brand or SN right now, sorry.

considering new gpu's are coming out, if you can hold off, i would hold off, at the least things will be cheaper for current card possibly

There probably won't be any new GPU's from AMD until the end of this year if not until Q1 2017. Nvidia is rumored to be bringing out a GTX 1080 in June but again its just a rumor. The only new GPU that we know of is the Dual Fury-X GPU but that is way outside his price range.

I would look at a 380x or a 390x. With its excellent DX12 performance it will last a long long time.

to the op, you can't go wrong with a 390X, and I agree with Hapatingjaky: it will last.
I switched from Crossfire 7950's to the Sapphire Nitro 390X with backplate, tri-fans and boosted clocks. Damn this card is sweet. Finally flawless gaming, and I might add that I've been in awe for the past two days because I'm playing FarCry Primal at very high settings on a 1080p monitor, but I'm pushing VSR at 3840x1800(!!!) WITHOUT A SINGLE HITCH!

After reading above i had a feeling of an orgasm than a simple awe ...
Either way the love is two ways ... You love the 390x and she loves you back ...

well, what can I say, I seem to be finally getting payback after giving Crossfire so much time and hope without, I have to admit, never really having in return what I was expecting when I first started the mgpu adventure, almost 6 years ago.

But now it seems like it's coming all at once! GPU squirting ftmfw!

Seriously, seeing this card push twice the resolution of my screen so flawlessly is like gaming for the first time!

EDIT: my bad, it's not 3840, it's 3200x1800. Still, one hell of a resolution!

I would say still a rumor. The only GPU confirmed for this year is the Dual GPU Fury-X. We had Pascal seen last year but got nothing. Doesn't mean its ready for primetime.

It means nothing. And with the state of HBM2 and GDDR5X I really wouldn't want a next gen based on GDDR5.

????

Polaris is coming mid this year according to AMD slides. They have shown both off, something Nvidia has not done yet. AMD will also be using HBM1 AND GDDR5.

-Added lines so we can see where they lay in time.

I've used 3200x1800 in my old games and it worked great. I played UT2004 at that resolution was pretty sexy and I don't even need some AA.

1. R9 390

2. GTX 970

These are by far the best bang for the buck out there until new GPUs hit, which may still be awhile! No reason to wait. 390x and 980 are not worth the extra cost.

Almost all recent game benchmarks show the 390 out performing the 970 by just a bit, with the 390 taking bigger and bigger leads as AMD improves drivers, but both are solid.

With that system and budget I'd say an AMD 380x is a good choice.

I'd then look at upgrading CPU to something like an FX6350 or FX8370 to get the most out of your new video card. A slow CPU can cripple your video cards performance.

290 or 290X new/used/refurb is the best buy for 200 with a 3/2 fan solution. You get performance of almost a 390(X) at cost of a 960 from NVidia.
