We must admit, at first we had reservations as to how good this new Catalyst software would be. However, after taking a brief look at the changes that the Catalyst software has implemented, we don't have the same doubts we started with. ATi has produced what appears to be an excellent update to their software and drivers package with improved stability, features, and performance. We are particularly interested in how well the SmartGart function is going to perform over time. If it lives up to ATi's claims, then there is going to be a major increase in the amount of satisfied ATi customers.

In a quest to maintain their position as a leader in the video card market, ATi is constantly looking to improve the end-user's overall experience. This applies to their latest hardware releases, as well as new and improved software developments. As we've recently seen, ATi has begun to seriously address some issues that have plagued them in the past. Lately, we've seen a marked increase in their efforts to improve driver performance and reliability. It seems like this year alone they have released updated drivers at an ever increasing pace, rapidly addressing any issues that arise with their products. But to really be a dominant player in an extremely competitive market, ATi knew they had to come out with something the "other guy" doesn't offer. The end result of their efforts is the new Catalyst Software Package. What is a Catalyst? Well, let's take a look and see.In a quest to maintain their position as a leader in the video card market, ATi is constantly looking to improve the end-user's overall experience. Catalyst: *OUCH*

Catalyst: *OUCH*

Catalyst is scary, scary, scary!

For one thing, it's *completely unified* (stretches across the *entire* Radeon family, from the R100/RV100 up; the only exception appears to be the FireGL8XXX series, which is R200-based).

For another, it is a *complete solution*, including drivers, MMC, HydraVision, and even Remote Wonder (How are they going to get HydraVision to work on single-RAMDAC cards, such as the original All-In-Wonder Radeon 7200? And will they sell RW retail?)

Thirdly, Catalyst, by definition, is *huge*. There is, quite literally, no way anyone with a 56K modem is going to be able to download this animal. Will ATI allow redistribution of Catalyst ISOs (or cloned CDs) so Radeon owners with fat pipes and CD-RWs can create Catalyst CDs for their bandwith-starved Radeon-driiven friends?

Fourth, ATI is thinking seriously about HDTV, and pointing the way toward yet another change in the All-In-Wonder line. The All-In-Wonder 8500DV has the only silicon (solid state) tuner in any ATI product (Microtune's MT-2032) but it was heavily plagued by oversensitivity issues (especially with regards to cable TV signals); the later AIW 7500 and 8500/128 went back to the traditional *crystal* tuner, even though it is a new Philips tuner, and *neither* can swallow HDTV (the 8500DV lacks the decoder section, and the crystal tuners lack the tuning section *and* the decoder section). Philips has a two-chip HDTV solution available (and they are ATI's supplier of choice for TV tuner parts), so expect a change with the All-In-Wonder 9000 (the R250-based AIW) to a complete HDTV solution (possibly with YPbPr input *and* output cables included and attachable via breakout boxes, ala 8500DV).

We will see.

Yeah, this download is going to be huge. ATI's servers better get some sleep tonight!

I agree it will be a bit bigger due to all the extra tools (if they aren't offer as separate), but the drivers as they stand NOW are unified to the same degree as PGHammer describes...I'm confused as to how the new Catalyst is more unified?

Do you guys remember when 9013 came out?

I think i d/loaded at something like .90kb/sec, well i hope today it will at least be something like 2kb/sec :p

Aye, it took me by quite some surprise too! It will be great to play around with those new drivers which should set the standard for future GPU's from ATi. They are getting better all the time.

Way to go ATi!

LOL!! The ATi driver dev team are now referred to as the 'Catalyst Crew'. That makes them sound like a cheesy boy-band!

Well the drivers are out, and they are a whopping 10MB's.....
But ATi's site is getting HAMMERED, so you 56k boys are in for a long one.....

Catalyst newer? 7.72 or 7.73?

Catalyst newer? 7.72 or 7.73?

Are the Catalyst drivers newer? .. if so why are they 7.72 when the leaked ones where 7.73... if so.. maybe somebody can mix the 7.72 panels with the 7.73 drivers...
