Blue screen o' Death problems with Catalyst + ME . . . li'l help?

Hey, I'm having trouble with the new Catalyst drivers and I'm just wondering if anyone could offer help or point me in the right direction. (many apologies if this is in the wrong section but I'm new to these boards.)

I installed the Catalyst drivers in ME a few days ago without problems; since then though I've formatted my hard drive due to an unrelated problem.

Anyway, I've downloaded the Powered By . . drivers ( I have a Radeon 8500, the original driver disk says Powered By on too) and it's simply not working. When I first installed these, having only a standard VGA driver installed already (figuring I could just install the catalyst drivers for my card?) I got a Windows Protection Fault blue screen error upon startup.

In safe mode, I removed the display drivers, and rebooted. ME keeps auto-recognizing the card as a Raeon 8500 / 8500LE and I keep cancelling this as from prior experience it won't work this way.

Installing drivers after cancelling the Radeon 8500 hardware detection box that comes up just results in an error where I can't install the display drivers, "try to install a standard VGA driver first".

Installing the VGA driver first allows the drivers to install, but leads to a blue screen protection fault again.

(Another thing to note: "ATI Drivers" appears in add/remove programs, but it can't find the files to remove.)

Anyone offer a few sage words? :)

Thanks

Did you try installing the drivers from device manager? Under display, try to update the drivers and point it to your catalyst folder. see what happened.

Well I got the drivers installed OK.

It just boots in 640x480 (full colours so I know the drivers work) and lingers, doing nothing at all.

Sometimes the start bar appears and flashes away instantly . .
