ATI Losing Dell?

Someone in the dell forum just posted this scan of an ad out of PC Gamer or something: http://www.merlinsoftware.com/8600.jpg

Supposedly it's the new Dell 8600, but you'll note that it advertises the nvidia GFFX 5650 (didn't even know they made that) and not the MR9600, which would be a fairly significant loss, if true.

And if you go configure a Dell 5150, the 64MB 5200 is an option over the 32MB MR9000.

What gives? Losing dell (I seem to recall CM saying they were their #1 customer) to nv seems to be a fairly significant problem.

well they had to redo the whole video chipset to make it fit into there piece of ****.

and you can still get a 64mb 9000

when dell releases there new system they will have the 9600 avail

the memory of the GeForceFX Go5600 was capped at 64MB according to the original specs. the 5650 is probably just a refresh and a quick response to the 128 MB Mobility Radeon 9600. recall that the ill-fated mobile version of the GeForce 4200 was (too) quickly sent to market in response to ati's mobile 9000.

Digit Life has info about the Inspiron 8600 on their news page.

Inspiron 8600 has 15.4" TFT LCD with WXGA (1280 x 800), WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) and WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolutions supported. Looking for the chipset we can say that the series will use PC2700 (DDR333 SDRAM). It is known, that 1.6 GHz-based model will have 1 GB RAM (maximal capacity for the systems – 2 GB). The most advanced model is equipped with 80 GB HDD (Ultra ATA/100). As for the graphics, new notebooks will have MOBILITY RADEON 9000 32 MB, optionally it can be changed to GeForce FX Go5650 128 MB or GeForce4 4200 Go 64 MB.

Often manufacturers have purchased huge lots of gpu's to sell in their systems. They have to move these still great selling chips to prevent loss, and yet have to offer upgrade options. How many people are going to help dell unload their m9's if they are offered the m10 as an upgrade? Dell will offer the m10 when it makes practical sense to do so.

well, since the nv38 is rumored to be name FX5950, this must be the mobile version of the nv36?

I'm wondering what the performance will be!
