Hi
I have just received my HIS 3870 X2 GPU at the moment I am running an HIS 3870 Turbo. On the new card it has a six pin and eight pin power connectors.
My
Tagon
800Watt PSU only as two six pin connectors will the eight pin
connector
accept the six pin..would someone please advise me what I must do as their is very little information on this in the box.

And as the drivers are the same will I just need to swap the cards over or will the new card require a fresh
installation
from the CD
Rom
.

 My old brain is
struggling
a bit with this new
technology
.
Regards

Yes the six pin will fit in the 8pin
I would uninstall the current drivers, swap vid card and install CD drivers, THEN upgrade CAT drivers as required.

I don't know about HIS, but my ASUS adds 3 or 4 new devices to device manager that wouldn't be there if I didn't install using their CD to start with.

Hi there,
What difference does it maken when you use the 8 pins instead of the 6 pins?
Cuz I bought the 'SAPPHIRE HD 3870 X2 also but When I try too boot it gives 1 long beep and 3 short beeps.
Soo I looked it up and the URL said it had too do something with my RAM checked it (by putting old vid [Nvidia EN8600GT]card back in).
And yes its is in a pcie 16 slot or something so what can the problem be than ??? if my power supply is 580 W

???

Please respond thank you

greetings sphr.

The extra 2pins are a ground connection. On the HD2900XT if you don't have both an a 8pin and 6pin connection then Overdrive doesn't enable in the CCC. I'm not sure if its the same on the 3870, but would sound reasonable. My Corsair VX 550 PSU doesn't have a true 8pin PCIe power connector, but instead a 6+2pin, where the 2pin is a bridge of ground to the other two pins. Its enough to enable Overdrive on my HD2900XT. IIRC some used a paperclip to simlulate the connection, though I would use at least a shielded connector (a piece of copper wire, with insulated sheath, and the ends tinned), or look for an adapter.

Does anyone know of a retailer that sells the 8pin (2x4) power cables? I'm having a hard time finding them. I'd really like to find 6pin to 8pin converters, if those even exist.

Nevermind, found the answer with Search:

Thanks

They do exist. Some AIBs shipped em with 2900s/3870X2s/GX2s AFAIR, and i've also seen em being retailed...albeit I don't exactly recall where. Try searching jonnyguru.com forums, I think the adapter was mentioned there.
