Ati Aiw 128 Can Work With Mmc 9.02!!!!!

Believe it or not AIW 128 CAN work with ATI MMC 9.02 with minor problems referring mostly to easylook!!!!
I have read all the threads posted to this forum up to now stating the problematic use of old ATI 128 PRO with the newest MMC software. MMC 8.1 needs special handling with folder modification during install in order to work albeit with TV tuner problems whereas nothing is reported for newer vs like 8.5 or 8.6... Nothing also has been reported for the simple non pro ATI AIW 128......
WELL all of you ATI AIW 128 users smile as YOU CAN USE your old card with the hottest MMC 9.02!!!!!
Ok up to now I am an owner of 3ATI AIW 128, 2VIVO 9200, 1 ATI8500 AIW DV and an AIW 9000 pro.... I am using the oldest cards in secondary computers and my quest was to be able to use the EASYSHARE function of >8.9 MMC in my private network (server AIW 9000pro clients AIW 128..).
Why go straight to 9.02MMC and mot previous vs like 8.9? The new 9.02 MMC seems to be designed very openly in terms of software and hardware restrictions as:
a. It can recognise the VIVO functions of VIVO CLUB HERCULES etc 9200 Radeon cards whereas other MMC version FAIL TO INSTALL THE ABOVE FUNCTION.... (I used the catalyst 3.7-3.9 drivers NOT NEWER...drivers above 4 don't work even with MMC 9.02 for anyone that cares)
b. It can install a third party DVD player licence to different Hardware: I used the Sapphire AIW 9000 DVD disk to install the DVD decoder to a Herclules 9200 VIVO. 8.9 9.0 MMC insist that the DVD decoder doesn’t exist WHEREAS MMC 9.02 INSTALLS IT FLAWLESSLY!!!!
Knowing the above I thought that if any MMC can work with OLD AIW 128 then this must be the 9.02 MMC. Now how did I make it work?
MMC 9.02 IN ORDER TO INSTALL PROPERLY NEEDS TO FIND A RADEON INSTALLED IN YOUR PC!!!!
First of all this applies for WIN XP Directx 9a installations. I installed properly the latest available XP AIW 128 drivers from the ATI site(which include WDM drivers). I installed the proper 7.2 MMC and tested that the system worked ok . I also installed the DAO 8.1 drivers needed for MMC DVD >8.1 installations. Then based on some reports from this forum in order to make 9.02 to work I installed the WDM 6378(1) drivers which can be found in the OLD catalyst 3.0 3.1 drivers. The drivers weren't detected automatically and I manually forced its installation for every WDM AIW case (Bt829, crossbar, audio, tuner, codec etc...) As expected NOTHING WORKED MMC 7.2 DIDN'T WORK AND MMC 9.02 FAILED TO INSTALL AS USUAL (wdm drivers don't affect 9.02 installation) I manually then reverted to the 2001 wdm drivers (not the Microsoft ones that come with XP but the ones installed with AIW 128 ati drivers) I mention this as after reverting back to the old wdm drivers XP KEPT REPORTING UNDER THE DRIVERS NAMES SOME SECONDARY FILES THAT WEREN'T LISTED AFTER FIRST INSTALLATION BUT WERE MENTIONED ONLY AFTER 6378 WDM DRIVERS INSTALLATION. Then I uninstalled the AGP AIW 128 and installed a simple 7500 pci radeon to a free pci slot. I turned on the PC, win XP installed the XP embedded drivers (NO CATALYST SOFTWARE INSTALLATION BE ME!!!!) I run the ATIwhiz for DVD decoder installation using the sapphire disk downloading the latest DVD decoder and then I run the MMC9.02 installation. 9.02 reported that no tuner was available (of course...with pci 7500) BUT enabled the custom installation procedure in which I enabled all the options INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN A DIFFERENT FOLDER FROM THE 7.2 MMC.
I restarted my PC and Guess everything worked fine!!!! No folder renames or catches during install.. nothing at all. TV tuner works ok DVD player works.. EASYSHARE WORKS OK!!!!!!!
OK EASYLOOK doesn't work as it wants the latest radeon drivers but with some help from the forrum someone might give a solution!! I have seen that you need to remove a file dll in order to make this annoying message disappear...
What I didn't:
I didn't install any Catalyst RADEON driver for the PCI 7500 as this might cause file conflicts..
I didn't install the dao 9.1 needed for the latest >9.0MMC DVD installations
I didn't uninstall the old 7.2 MMC but installed the new 9.02 to different folder...
I didn't remove the 6378wdm files, I only reverted to the previous ati aiw 128 xp wdm drivers

SO ALL OF YOU STILL USING THE OLD AIW 128 (MOST PROBABLY 128PRO) YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM THE LATEST SOFTWARE!!!!! DON'T THROW THEM AWAY..THE CAN STILL DO THEIR JOB WELL!!!!!!!
ATI THANKS A LOT!!!!!!!!!

Update!!!!!!

Update!!!!!!

UPDATE!!!!!!!!

Ok I have good news and bad news!!!
First of all wdm 6378 reinstalled themselves and actually 9.02 is using them. I have been fooled by the driver's date (2001) but a more closer look to driver's files revealed the reinstallation of the wdm 6378!!! So you might not actually have to unistall them prior to 9.02 installation...
WDM CAPTURE THROUGH TV WORKS!!!!!!
The thruview mode as expected doesn't work
DVD 9.02 WORKS FINE!!!!!!
The bad news now...
The system seems to be unstable but this was also the case previously without the aiw 128 client. I had two or three crashes on the server (aiw 9000 pro) which after then online crash analysis pointed to the need for sp2 XP installation..
I tried to update the 8.1dao with 9.1 (for the 9.02mmc instabillities) on the aiw 128rage card and this lead to a tolal disaster!!!! EASYSHARE REFUSED TO WORK EVER SINCE...... BOTH CLIENTS (AIW 128 & 9200VIVO) REPORTED SERVER PROBLEMS AND FAILED TO LOAD EASYSHARE. I solved the problem after several installations uninstallationS back and forth between 9.02 and 9.0 mmc in the server ( 9.0 mmc actually couldn't find a proper sound input for the tv audio..) NOW WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM: IN MY OPINION DURING ANY SOFTWARE INSTALLATION A HARDWARE CHECK IS REDONE!!! IF THE CLIENT WITH AIW 128 IS DETECTED EASYSHARE SERVER SHUTS ITSELF DOWN EVEN IF A COMPATIBLE ****RADEON CLIENT EXISTS.... EASYSHARE MOST PROBABLY CANNOT OPERATE IN MIXED ENVIRONMENT!
So during install I shut down the 128aiw client and 9.02 worked again!!!
;)

Update 2!!!!!

Update 2!!!!!

After a few days of testing:
9.02 and AIW128 work fine VERY STABLE as long as Easyshare is not engaged.... If engaged problems appear which are not only CLIENT (AIW 128) BUT SERVER DEPENDENT (AIW 9000 PRO...). The server seems not to be able to follow the client's control over input change and as a result freezing BOTH applications (server and client) This is often seen in simultaneous TV and Easyshare APPLICATIONS RUNNING in the Client (YES EVEN WITH AIW 128 YOU CAN HAVE TWO TV CHANNELS PLAY SIDE BY SIDE.....)!!!!!
So it seems that the Server part of easyshare 9.02 is crap. I uninstalled the server 9.02MMC and exhange it with 9.1 WITH BETTER RESULTS IN STABILITY IN BOTH SERVER AND CLIENT.... So a mixed environment with 9.02Clients/9.1Servers seems to work BETTER than everything 9.02MMC......
8.9MMC was also stable but failed to recognize AIW 9000 (no DVD decoder....) 9.0 was unacceptable as it couldn't even recognize the audio inputs of the MB (no sound with 9000AIW......)

Hey, great find!

A couple of questions though.
Was this done with a 16mb AIW128 or 32mb version? I've read on here before that the capture chipset is different?

Aswell, have you tried at all installing the radeon drivers on the same computer as the AIW 128 card?

Alin99
I have the 16mb vs of AIW128...(with rage 128 ) not even the PRO one(with rage 128pro).... Actually the AIW rage 128pro have the rage theater 100 chip for capture and that was the reason that these were the first AIW to be tested with the new MMC (above 7.2) as almost al radeons up to 9200 use the same capture chip..... BUT AIW 128 works to although with the older wdm drivers as posted above.
I HAVEN'T AND I DON'T INTEND TO TRY THE EARLIEST WDM DRIVERS AS THIS MIGHT MESS UP MY SYSTEM
No I haven't tried to install ANY RADEON DRIVERS AS DUE TO PNPfunction after swaping the 7500 for the aiw 128 and rebooting the system WILL NOT INSTALL THEM.....I THINK THAT THERE WE ARE STUCK WITH THE OLD 2001 DRIVERS..
MMC 9.02 INSTALLATION IS ANOTHER THING! IT CHECKS THE HARDWARE ONLY DURING FIRST INSTALL!!!!

up to 8500 only

up to 8500 only

All AIW 9XXX series including 9000PRO and 9200/SE have Theater 200 onboard. However, all VIVO Radeon cards have the old Theater 100 onboard, even with X800 series.

Good to know since my card is an AIW128 16mb pci.

I have gotten the TV to work with MMC7.2 and with my radeon8500 installed as long as I don't have both cards displaying parts of the desktop at the same time. It only works when the AIW is displaying but it does leave room for possibilites with the newer mmc. So, it might actually work with both video card drivers installed, I haven't had the time to experiment.

I did try it once, long before seeing your post but it was with cat 4.6? WDM drivers set and after manually installing the updates, the computer forgot that the AIW can capture. Those drivers actually had support for the bt829 chipset, but they didn't work so good.

Simplified installation

Simplified installation

I have just reinstalled WinXP and the process of combining XP MMC 9.1and a RAGE 128 AIW AGP CAN BE VERY SIMPLE!
1.Install RAGE 128 XP drivers reboot
2.install the WDM tv-capture-wdm-6-14-01-6178v1.exe (from old 3.1 catalyst)Reboot
3.Install DAO (9.1 works ok). Make sure that the WDM 6178 are installed for WDM Bt829 video, Specialized MVD decoder Teletext decoder, TV audio crossbar TV tuner (first file in drivers page). If not manually overwrite them in WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/Drivers folder! Turn off PC
4.Unplug your AGP RAGE 128 AIW. PLUG any 9000 or 9200 AGP or even PCI card most preferably with VIVO capabilities.
5.Turn on PC DON'T INSTALL ANY CATALYST DRIVERS, install DVD player if available and MMC 9.1 or 9.02. Turn off your PC
6.Swap your 9000-9200 with you 128RAGE AIW AND TURN ON YOUR PC. IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME TO LOAD BUT IT WILL WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!
