All-in-wonder rage128 BIOS

New member
I bought a PAL version of aiw rage128 (32MB) in Europe.I would like to display
my linux desktop on my NTSC TV.I try to find someone with a NTSC version of
this card. This person could get the NTSC version of the bios and send it to
me.I would then flash my card, enable tv-out at bootup and use the vesa driver with
XFree to display the linux desktop.

If someone can help, please let me know.I can tell you how to get the bios
from your card.It's very easy.

Thanks.

Do NOT flash your BIOS! - LightSpeed @ 05:25 PM EST
I am still seeing countless people either who have screwed up their cards by doing a BIOS flash, or are looking to do so with a new flash ROM.
I do not recommend that you flash the BIOS of your card with one from a different card, with many reasons.

First of all, there are at this time over 50 different designs of the Rage 128 card.
There are differences between the boards, like memory, core speed, possibly even newer chips that require different code to function properly.

If you are looking to increase the performance of your video card, flashing the BIOS will not be the solution.
The possibilities of failure and not being able to re-program your card to its original state are not worth the risk.
I recommend if you want to overclock your card, get the appropriate cooling, use the Rage 128 Tweaker and go for it! Don't get a fan and jack the speed up to "meltdown level", do it in small increments, testing your system stability for a couple of hours before going higher, always use common sense.

Some users want to have NTSC TV-out with a PAL card. This is not possible with the crystal on the PAL Rage 128 cards, as it has a lower frequency than the NTSC model. The reverse may be possible, but with a 1 in 50 chance, I wouldn't risk it.

If you want the performance of the retail card, buy the retail card.
Do not expect your OEM card to run as fast as the retail counterpart.
It is not logical for any manufacturer to sell a product which is not running at its optimal clock speed, give or take 10-15% for overclocking, just like CPU's. You will not likely find a video card rated at 100MHz when it is capable of operating at 150MHz.
It all comes down to chip yield, let's face it, the retail products have better quality control, warranty, components, etc. not only with video cards but with generally all hardware, CPU anyone? ;-)

Still want to try it?

As Above ' DO NOT TRY A BIOS FLASH WITH THIS CARD'.

If the card has a Theatre chipset then software should be able to set the video output to PAL from the default NTSC from within the TV output panel of the drivers.

Check the driver control panel , you may need to instal a different driver package to have access to the full set of possible control panel.

Try here http://www.geocities.com/ziyadhosein/ for many helpful driver packages.

Hello ,

Thanks for trying to warn me.However I think I know what chipset is used in my aiw rage128.If I get a bios,I will check if it was designed for the same chipset. And there is still a way to flash back the card with the old bios by using a pci video card.

For the crystal : from what I've read it's only a problem concerning the tv tuner. You can't indeed turn your pal tuner into a ntsc tuner even if you flash the bios with a ntsc version because of the crystal in the tv tuner.

Aiw can output both ntsc and pal signals.

I think some people in other forums could be interested as well.

(think of the linux forum for exemple)

This has nothing to do with the linux forum and it shouldn't have been moved here. I guess some mods get scared when they see the word "linux" in a thread.
Anyway, it might be hard to find a bios for such an old video card. You can easilly find many bios for radeons but not for 128s.
Try reading this page (german) http://members.fortunecity.com/ragefurybios/ and try posting in this forum http://www.wimsbios.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=28&topicdays=0&start=0 if you can't find a suitable bios.

Flashing the BIOS on a Rage128 based card is not advised. There are many many different BIOS revisions for the Rage128 series, and the wrong one can kill the card.

I recommend you just get a cheap Radeon based AIW card at this point if the Rage128 Tweak software can't help you.

One more thing, please do not make multiple threads of the same thing in different sections of the forums. It adds clutter, and it is against our policy. Took me a few minutes to clean up all your threads.
