AIW Radeon owners, please confirm this for me?

After installing your ATI MMC7.0, can you check if your "c:\program files\ati multimedia\main" folder contains this file "MFC42.DLL"???
I just want to confirm if its the installation CD from ATI is the problem or its a "library file" issue with my WIN98 OS. ATI tech support claimed, I have a registry issue with this library file (somehow got unlinked in my registry), therefore this error message each time when I try to run DVD, VCD, TV, CD Audio & File Player (which is ATIMMC.EXE).
"Error Starting Program ATIMMC.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880"
ATI tech support suggested that download the "libraries update" file from Microsoft and it should fix my registry. I did, but problem still not fix. This file from Microsoft is called "SPEU.EXE", just in case anyone is interested.
If I was to manually copy the file "MFC42.DLL" to the folder "c:\program files\ati multimedia\main". Than this fixes the problem.

One other thing I forgot. Please specify if you have the CUSL2 mobo or not and if Intel's UltraATA installed as well.

Thanks in advance!

That MFC file is a major dll in windows. Lots of stuff uses it. Have you tried copying it to the windows/system folder? If that doesnt work, try installing something that uses that file. Like I think ICQ uses it...

I dont have the AIW, but those are just some suggestions...

fquan,

are you running any other DVD software, like powerDVD or winDVD. After I installed powerDVD, the ati-software dvd player stop responding and came me a atimmc. error, page fault. I changed two .ax files (as suggested in this forum) in the powerDVD directory and the video in, DVD player worked again.

Thanks for responding guys, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post, just though more info would be better.

FarENheiT,

I have ICQ and others installed which uses that MFC42.DLL file. Yes, that file is in my windows\system folder (as a matter of fact, that is the file I manually copied to "C:\program files\ati multimedia\main" folder.

Oxide,

No, I only have ATI MMC installed.

Some more info for you guys:
1) System was working great with P3BF, Rage Fury & ATI-TV with ATI MMC 6.2 installed.
2) Replaced above with CUSL2, used on-board video. Installed ASUS 815e chipset inf file, ASUS 815e graphics drivers for on-board video, Intel's ultraATA 6.0 drivers. System is still working just great at this point.
3) Finally got my hands on the AIW Radeon. Removed Fury video & MMC drivers. Installed AIW Radeon video & MMC 7.0 drivers from installation disk. Installation went very smooth. If I try to run any MMC applications, I get this error message "Error Starting Program ATIMMC.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880".

So my problem happened between 2 & 3. Just trying to pinpoint which driver program screwed it up for me.
1) ASUS Intel 815e chipset inf
2) ASUS 815e graphics drivers
3) Intel's UltarATA 6.0 drivers
4) un-install of the Fury video & MMC 6.2
5) AIW Radeon installation disk

I am temped to point my fingers at the ultraATA drivers, because I heard there are a lot of issues with ATAPTI devices (CDRW, CDROM, DVD, etc). Like I said earlier, after copying the MFC42.DLL to "c:\program files\ati multimedia\main", I can run those MMC applications, except DVD player (I get a black screen & no sound). Sounds like a ATAPTI issue to me. I may un-install the Intel UltraATA drivers to see if that fixes the DVD issue.

I still need the answer for:
1) Does the AIW installation disk, add MFC42.DLL file to c:\program files\ati multimedia\main" folder. Can someone check your folder and reply. If no, than I can conclude its NOT the installation disk's problem.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, nobody wants to read my long posts, so I keep it short this time.
I solved the DVD issue. Conflict with Intel's ultraATA drivers. As soon as I removed them, my DVD player worked. Those drivers are really bad on ATAPI type drives.

I still need help on the MFC42.DLL issue.
"Error Starting Program ATIMMC.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880" when ever I run DVD, VCD, TV, etc.

Anyone know how I can add that "link" back to the registry file. Where in the registry file should I look?

Question, did you reinstall Windows when installing Radeon also CUSL2
if not that could be your problem. Have done both vid and mobo swaps and windows never likes those unless you reinstall from scratch. You end up have a buch a linked files that shouldn't be linked anymore and problems claiming a DLL as its own even if the program never exist. And windows likes to restore files, which can be a pain

Yet to do a fresh install since more than 5 years ago, been pretty lucky. I dot't give up that easy, fresh installs are no fun. This is the only way to force yourself to research and learn.
I think I have my answer (fix), just can not wait until I go home tonite to verify.
I will keep you guys posted.

OK, I solved both of my problems. The solution was to:
1) Remove Intel's UltraATA100 drivers on mobos that support the ATA100 drives. They have a lot of conflicts with atapi type drives (CDRW, CDROM, DVD, etc.). There is NO need for these drivers. I benched using HD Tach, with & without Intel's drivers. There are NO performance differences (no performance hit at all without!). CPU utilzation with - 18%, CPU utilzation without - 4% ONLY! As you can see, its better NOT to install them anyways!
2) Somehow there was another copy of this "mfc42.dll" in my c:\windows folder. This file should NOT be here, to remove you have to boot to real DOS mode before you can delete. This file should only be in your c:\windows\system folder only. This file may appear in other folders, but that is OK. but must not be in your c:\windows folder. As well, you could confirm if you have the correct one by going to this site. http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/fileversion/dllinfo.asp
