The motherboard I have in my computer has an AGP slot but the specs do not say that it is 2x or 4x compatible. Can I install an AGP 2x or 4x video card or do I have to use a card that is only AGP or PCI. The computer is about 3yrs., PII 233.

A Motherboard of 3 years age, normaly doesn't support 2x o. 4x AGP. 2x can be possible, if you bought an expensive, high-end board.
Try a system diagnosis programm (should be found in magazin cds or at the internet),it tells you truely what AGB spezifications your mainboard has.

I imagine that you have an LX based board. LX does support 2x AGP (there was never an Intel chipset that supported less than 2x), but it might not work with the more fussy AGP cards. One main problem with motherboards of that period was that they couldn't supply the power required by the AGP card - that's the most common reason for failure, not the AGP features support.

But I did have an AGP Rage Pro card with an LX board, and a friend of mine has a TNT card on an LX board, so there's a chance that a card you'll get will work. But it's best to try before you buy.
