5450 + Windows 10...

Do these legacy cards, such as the HD 5XXX, have a good track record with windows 10?

I am trying to fix my friend's setup where in he installed windows 10 and catalyst crashes, the screen constantly flickers, and device manager sometimes identifies the card, and sometimes doesn't.

I have options though. I have an old GT240 to try, as well as trying the actual motherboard dvi interface. But was just wondering if I should spend time working on it or just shove in an nvidia card or give the integrated a chance.

My old 5870 seems to be working ok in windows 10. (fresh install)

But I don't play games on that computer just web browsing/watching TV movies and file server duties.

I might install an old game tonight to check how it handles it.

so just a bit of an update.

the biggest issue now is whenever i try to go into windows explorer, or open any sort of file, the screen "flickers", and the task is ended. so i literally cannot double click or run anything. the only way i was able to uninstall the ati drivers and install the nvidia ones is through the device manager.

i have subbed into the machine a nvidia 240, and at least now the resolution is properly identified, but computer is still unusable.

edit: have tried both sticks of ram. with one i am able to boot in and the issue remains. with the other i get as far as the "enter password" screen and it goes black after that with the computer still running.

also, this is a relatively fresh install of windows, and there's is probably less than 1 gig of other files on the computer, other than the OS installation files.

after countless hours trying to figure out the problem, it seems the core of this problem is an error that come up with something called

UIRibbon.dll

which comes up any time any sort of windows explorer -type window is opened up, and it crashes.

I have tried installing a freeware program called "Ribbon Disabler" found here http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.20 but the issue remains.

Have you tried this method?

i dont think it is a GPU issue anymore (looks like thats what that is). i installed a geforce 240 because i thought the problem is the 5450 (since the gpu wasn't being recognised in device manager), but that wasn't the issue.

it is basically just that .dll file that is being a jerk. funny thing is, i was the one that installed windows for him in the first place, and the computer ran fine. it was maybe a month or two after that he got in touch with me that windows explorer was crashing.

Thing about windows 10, its like a Konica Minolta printer, if it works it works great, if it doesn't its just a mess. I had ALOT of BSODs when i got windows 10, and they have settled down a bit, now its been like 4 months since i've had one. Explorer isn't only an issue with some systems, its also the powershell and the start menu will crash or just not work. At this point I have seen so many random issues with windows 10 on different machines. Was his an upgrade from windows 7? Ive used 5450s and 6450s just fine in win10 machines so I have to saw its not the videocard. Good luck. :D
