3850 AGP + tv as only monitor, issues

Well for the past few hours i've been very confused about getting the tv to play nice with the 3850, my friend has some generic branded 26' tv he uses as a monitor, ccc detects the max res as 1920x1080, but detects the tv as a monitor, although i can enable clone mode and clone the picture to the tv...(tv is connected via DVI cable)

the max res selectable is 1280x1024, is there something i have to do to enable the HD res's?

also i've noticed in my CCC i can add HDTV support, in his it seems to be missing, also the overdrive tab seems to be missing, was hoping to play around with that, as we were playing tf2 on it, and it just seemed like the display wasn't refreshing quick enough, gameplay seemed smooth at max AA or none, low or high textures, all smooth, but for some reason didn't look right, i'm guessing it could be the generic tv is the problem, but was hoping enabling HD modes would cure it

AFAIK, on an SD TV, the highest you can output with the Catalyst drivers is 1280x1024. Going higher doesn't do you any good anyway as that is way higher than the res of an SD TV. So if you're using composite or s-video, that's just the way it is. If he wants both on, he can't use clone mode. He'll have to use extended desktop mode. Even on a 36" SD TV 1024x768 is barely readable over s-video on the desktop.

Now, if this is an HDTV, you can run component or dvi/hdmi and that should be able to go higher (don't have one around to test), but you can't enable HD modes for non-hdtv's. They're not capable of handling an HD signal.

its a full hd tv, it won't even output 1280x1024, screen just goes blue, his xbox however works on 1080p, using DVI cable, like i saids ccc reports that it can output to 1920x1080 but I can't select the resolution ?

IF he's using DVI, the TV may be one of those weird res TV's where it's 1366x768. If he doesn't have the HDTV options in his CCC he needs to either update or reinstall the drivers. You need to specifically turn on HDTV support for some res's in the HDTV driver options.

He's what he should do:

1.) Hook up only the HDTV via DVI (no other monitor)
2.) Boot PC
3.) You should see *something* on the HDTV, but the image is probably either blurry or stretched
4.) In windows, fire up CCC, and look at the Monitor settings (Monitor 1 or Monitor 0)
5.) Below that is the HDTV settings. Try enabling 720P first, and then apply that res as I know some generic (smaller) HDTV's really aren't true 1080P (and some are only 720p/1080i). If that works, then try 1080i or if 1080P becomes an option, try that.

Also, he might want to power cycle the TV. Even though the GPU won't be broadcasting an HDCP encrypted signal, there may still be an HDCP handshake issue preventing the TV and the GPU from working together and power cycling seems to help with this.

Then if this all works, fire up the PC with monitor and HDTV attached and, if need be, go through the steps again to setup the HDTV.

thanks for that!

the tv is used as the only monitor, although ccc detects 2 displays, 1 monitor & 1 tv (which are both the same) when i put ccc into clone mode, set the tv as the primary display, the imagine in games seems a lot smoother flowing, it'll only let me use 800x600 or 1024x768.

the hd tab shown in your screenshot resembles my pc, although for some reason on his pc its not there, there are 3 items, but there was something else isntead of HDTV support  can't remember what it was off the top of my head.

also, i'm not sure if it makes a difference but I checked earlier today and its a DVI to VGA cable, theres no DVI input on the tv, just component & HDMI, unfourtantly don't have the leads to try those modes

The picture quality is very crisp, on the desktop its just like using a pc monitor, just in games it seems a bit off, and of course the lack of correct resolution is frustrating! before this card we just assumed it couldn't do it before since he had a fx5200 :bleh: I managed to convince him to go for the newer card as he wanted to play ff2, and after the slideshow of gaming he realised it was time to give in!
