2D problems with Catalyst

Hi,

Just installed the catalyst drivers and got a very annoying problem in 2D with characters all screwed up. Very well noticable with IE favorites. Take a look at:

If I move the mousepointer over the favorites it gets all right. Any solutions?

thanks,

Rikki

Complete deinstall?

Complete deinstall?

This was happening to my friend some time ago when he went from some older drivers to newer ones. He the did a complete deinstall and then reinstall of Radeon drivers as is writen in Technical section of this forum and after that all worked OK.

Does this have anything to do with font smoothing being enabled/disabled?

Just a thought. It might be just a simple thing as that.

yeah i got one suggestion

quit taking higher res screenshots and downsizing em using paint to make it look like a problem lol

the text would be corrupted possibly but not every piece of the image

I have the same problem

I have the same problem

I have the same problem and mine hasnt gone away regardless fo re-installing my driver or even trying a different set.

cpharrboy,

Seems like we both have an Ali chipset. Might be related to this? I had the same problem with the default winXP drivers but not with the latest driver (Omega/Plutonium).

ATI fixes one thing but brakes another (again), pisses me off,

re "we both have ALi"

re "we both have ALi"

I really hope this isnt the problem...ALi Chipset. I do have the newest AGP driver installed but...I was thinking maybe one of the AGP settings in my BIOS (AGP offset delay, Driving value) may have something to do with it also....I dunno....I just wish I knew who to complain to about this because they wouldnt get an e-mail. I would call them. I totally never had this problem with my Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO.

Solved with Plutonium 6071B

Solved with Plutonium 6071B

I reinstalled the Plutonium 6071B drivers and all was OK. For me all games are more smooth anyway with the Plutonium drivers. I really don't understand the enthousiasm of people for the Catalyst drivers. DVD subtitles are still broken, terrible fog (banding) in SOF II, terrible performance in f12002 (about 66% in comparison woth the Plutonium drivers), etc, etc....

Maybe time for ATI to hire guys like Omega and Plutonium.....

This problem is caused by the combination M$ Windows - Radeon - ALI Chipset and is a bug in the "shadows behind menues" effect. This problem has been around since the beginning, although ATI actually solved the issue a couple of driver versions ago. Unfortunately, the suckers in ATI's drivers development team seems to have introduced the same problem once again.
A simple solution (before) was to disable the shadows behind menues effect. I dunno if this still helps...

On my system I actually noticed an significant improvement in the 2D. My Desktop Icons are much crisper than they have been.
Honestly, all-in-all, I'm quite pleased with the results of installing the newer drivers.

Sure, but on the other hand you don't suffer from the bug that is discussed in this thread, since you are not on an ALI platform...

Remove shadow:

Remove shadow:

Control Panel > Display > Apperance (tab)> Effects...
uncheck Show shadows under menus (and other useles effects)

Has it absolutely been established that it's an ALI platform bug? I think that needs to be established first and foremost. It does point to it, and getting input from others with other systems and OS will help narrow it down.

For instance, what are others experiencing who have ALI based systems but using different Windows OSes? Any difference?

My Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO didnt do it either. Its only my R8500 that does it. I know it does have something to do with windows being open on top of text. Very very similar to what the guy said about the shadows behind windows thing.

As I said in my first post, it's the combination ALI, Windows and Radeon bug. It has been recognized and solved by ATI before, so it's really strange they let it through again...
I actually tested it on my own system like this:
ALI + Radeon + Linux is fine.
Via + Radeon + Windows is fine.
ALI + Geforce + Windows is fine.
ALI + Radeon + Windows produces the mentioned error.

Actually, it's even more visible and annoying when installing XP. Each and every menu suffer from the same problem in the installation process...
